Labour Day: Honoring the Hands That Build Our Future

Today, on Labour Day, we celebrate the dignity of work and the incredible women of WA-WA Kenya who are redefining what labour means for their families and communities.

For women in Homa Bay's fishing communities, dignified labour is the bridge away from s*x-for-fish and toward economic independence. Through skills in tailoring, hairdressing, computer packages, beauty therapy, weaving, baking, and sustainable farming, they are building futures on their own terms.

To every woman working hard to rewrite her story, we see you, we salute you, and we stand with you.

Happy Labour Day from all of us at WA-WA Kenya.

This week, under the careful guidance of trainer Mariam Mariana, our Beauty Therapy trainees are mastering gel polish application, a high demand service that builds repeat clients.

For women leaving harmful practices like quarry work, loading nets and s*x-for-fish, mastering gel means loyal customers, premium pricing, dignity and economic independence.

Thank you to all our donors and partners for making this training possible.

Our Fashion and Design trainees are just putting the final touches to school uniforms ordered by Wanga Primary. We're so proud as such orders offer financial stability. In turn, this keeps vulnerable women away from harmful practices like s*x for fish empowerment.

Something beautiful is happening at WA-WA Kenya every morning. Thanks to the incredible generosity of Jo, Andrea, and Mirjam, our women and children are starting their days with warm, nutritious porridge, and the difference is real!

Mothers can focus on learning new skills without worrying about hungry bellies. Children have the energy to play and grow. And everyone feels the love behind every bowl.

We've watched little faces light up and hardworking women smile as they share this simple, nourishing meal together. It's more than food, it's a moment of care and connection.

Asante sana (thank you so much) to Jo, Andrea, and Mirjam for caring for our community. You're making a beautiful difference! 💙
