Today we are celebrating Ivan! Ivan lives with her single mother in Garithe to the Northern part of the Malindi Watamu Arabuko Sokoke Biosphere Reserve. A young environmentalist featured during the Mazingira Day commemoration at Garithe in the Biosphere Reserve! Through this Nature Kenya awarded him. Today, Garithe Mangrove Conservation and Nuts Value Addition had the privilege of hosting a delegation from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) during their field visit under the Community Resilience Program in Kilifi County. The visit, implemented through KECOSCE’s Peace and Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) initiative, provided an opportunity to showcase how community-led conservation and economic empowerment are transforming livelihoods in Ngomeni and surrounding areas. We were pleased to walk the delegation through our mangrove restoration efforts, sustainable harvesting practices, and the Lainisha Coconut Oil and nuts value addition activities that continue to create employment and strengthen social cohesion.

The discussions highlighted how environmental conservation, women empowerment, and youth economic opportunities play a critical role in reducing vulnerability to radicalization and fostering long-term peace. By restoring mangroves, protecting coastal ecosystems, and creating value-added products, our community is building resilience while promoting sustainable livelihoods. UNDP acknowledged the impact of these initiatives and emphasized the importance of scaling such models across Kilifi County. Garithe Mangrove Conservation and Nuts Value Addition is grateful for the visit and remains committed to advancing community-driven conservation, empowering households economically, and contributing to peaceful, resilient coastal communities.

Garithe Mangrove Conservation and Nuts Value Addition Shines at the International Day for Biosphere Reserves

Garithe Mangrove Conservation and Nuts Value Addition proudly participated in the celebration of the International Day for Biosphere Reserves held at the Gede KWS Office within the Malindi Watamu Arabuko Sokoke Biosphere Reserve. The event brought together conservation champions, partner organizations, government agencies, community groups, and youth representatives to reflect on the balance between people and nature and to reaffirm commitments to sustainable development.

During the event, Garithe Mangrove Conservation and Nuts Value Addition showcased their flagship community enterprise product, Lainisha Coconut Oil, under the theme of promoting sustainable livelihoods within the Biosphere Reserve. The exhibition highlighted how local communities can transform natural resources into value-added products while conserving ecosystems and empowering women.

Through Lainisha Coconut Oil, the group continues to demonstrate the link between environmental conservation and economic empowerment. By supporting mangrove restoration and creating livelihood opportunities, particularly for women and youth, Garithe is proving that conservation can go hand in hand with community prosperity.

Speaking during the event, representatives from Garithe emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation in community-led conservation. “When communities are empowered to protect and sustainably use their resources, the benefits extend far beyond the environment – they transform lives,” one member noted.

The event provided a platform for Garithe to connect with other stakeholders across the Biosphere Reserve, share experiences, and strengthen partnerships aimed at building resilient, environmentally conscious communities.

The success of initiatives like Lainisha Coconut Oil stands as a powerful example of how grassroots action can contribute to achieving sustainable livelihoods while preserving Kenya’s coastal biodiversity.

Yesterday we were honored to host a high-level delegation from IFAD led by the Eastern Africa Regional Director Ms. Sara Mbago Bhunu, Country Director Ms. Mariatu Kamara, and Country Representative Mr. Moses Abubakar together with the Director of Agriculture, Kilifi County.

The visit highlighted the incredible impact of the KCEP CRAL program in empowering smallholder farmers through innovative approaches such as the Gender Action Learning System (GALS), which promotes gender equity, shared decision-making, and improved household nutrition. The e-voucher program has also enhanced farmers’ access to quality inputs while promoting financial literacy and sustainable farming practices.

At Garithe, we were proud to showcase our journey with KCEP CRAL, a story of transformation driven by women. Through training, mentorship, and support, local women have moved from small-scale coconut farming to entrepreneurship and value addition. Today, many women are directly involved in the production, packaging, and marketing of our Lainisha Coconut Oil, which is now available as both cooking and body oil. This initiative has not only created income opportunities but has also restored confidence, dignity, and leadership among rural women.

Engagements like this go a long way in strengthening community resilience, enhancing women’s economic independence, and promoting local innovation. The visit reaffirmed the importance of partnerships that place women at the heart of agricultural transformation and sustainable development.
