WORLD WETLAND DAY 2025
National celebrations will be held on 2nd February 2025 at Ondiri Wetland, Kiambu County.

World Wetlands Day is celebrated annually on February 2nd to mark the day of the adoption of the Ramsar Convection. The day is used to raise awareness on the importance of wetlands for people and the planet.

Tana Delta - Ungwana Bay characterised by rich coral reef patches, seaweed and seagrass beds is a home of:
✓The rare marine mammal known as dugongs(dugong dugong) as well as the five species of threatened marine turtles: Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricate), the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas), Olive Ridley Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), Leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) and the Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta)
✓Marine fish species include sardines, prawns, mullets, rabbit fish, sharks, rays, parrot fish and snappers.
✓Several threatened fish species e.g. in the sawfish family Pristidae; Narrowsnouth Sawfish (Pristis zijsron) and Wide sawfish (Pristis pectinata)

The Tana Riverine forests are the only home of two "rare" and "critically" endemic primates, the Tana River Red Colobus (Colobus badius rifomitratus) and Tana River Mangabey (Cercocebus galeritus galeritus).
It is also home to the restricted Hunter's antelope or (Hirola Beatragus hunteri). The forest hosts at least 61 plants species that are globally or nationally rare including The Tana

Prosopis rapidly form dense thorny thickets that reduce and lead to loss of biodiversity. This is due to the fact that Prosopis invade and replace native vegetation.
Invaded grasslands are transformed to woodland and forests. Loss of grass cover under canopies may also promote soil erosion.
It has massive impacts upon water resources.
