For years, our implementation of Jali Dada Mentorship has reminded us of one important truth: when boys are given safe spaces to learn, speak, participate and be guided, we can help shape the decisions they make today and the men they become tomorrow.

Across our communities, boys are navigating difficult choices around discipline, education, drugs and substance abuse, peer pressure, relationships, and their future. These conversations cannot be left until it is too late.

As an organization, we believe engaging boys must go beyond telling them what not to do. It means listening to them, mentoring them, equipping them with life skills and creating positive spaces where they can make informed decisions.

And we engaged them through sport. ⚽🏀
We can create a platforms where boys can come together, build teamwork and discipline, develop confidence, learn accountability and engage in conversations that can influence the choices they make beyond the field.

Our experience with Jali Dada Mentorship continues to inform our commitment to meaningful, sustained engagement; not just with girls, but with boys too.
Because raising a generation that makes better choices requires all of us.

Let’s invest in boys. Let’s listen to them. Let’s mentor them. Let’s give them positive spaces to grow.

𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐉𝐚𝐥𝐢 𝐃𝐚𝐝𝐚 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩

In Dumi IDP Camp, Garsen in Tana Delta Sub-County, Badili Tana Initiative hosted eMentoring Africa for the Mentorship Trail as they celebrate 17 years of transforming minds—a journey of listening, learning, and connection.
As part of this meaningful engagement, we delivered the Jali Dada through 3 focused breakout sessions: one with girls on self-awareness and menstrual health, and another with young mothers on income-generating opportunities and entrepreneurship and boys bonding through sports.
- Knowing My Worth
Children and young people are vulnerable, but sometimes one word of encouragement is enough to spark hope and inspire change.
Through participatory engagement, the girls and young boys explored self-awareness, confidence, personal worth, and the importance of believing in their potential. It was inspiring to witness a resilient community that is ready to challenge the status quo and create a better future through honest conversations and shared experiences.
- Menstrual Health and Personal Dignity
Understanding puberty and menstruation, while addressing myths and stigma around periods, is especially important in communities where the challenges facing the girl child cannot be ignored.
We guided the girls on the proper use of sanitary products and encouraged them to remain confident, stay in school, protect their dignity, and learn to say NO to anything that threatens their safety and well-being.
As a tangible boost to personal dignity, every participant received a dignity hamper containing sanitary pads, toothpaste, soap, and a toothbrush.
- From Ideas to Opportunity
The conversation with young mothers on entrepreneurship was both important and timely. Many of them are victims of circumstances, while limited access to skills, capital, and economic opportunities continues to affect their ability to become self-reliant.

The session explored practical areas such as business management, record keeping, debt management, saving, and starting small businesses. It also challenged the culture that expects women to depend on men for survival.
The young mothers appreciated the conversation and shared that becoming economically active requires practical solutions that respond to their realities; not just business ideas. A key outcome was their strong interest in practical training on how to start, manage, and sustain businesses, together with continued mentorship and support beyond the initial session.
- Building a Practical Pathway
This session marked an important entry point: moving from talking about challenges to co-creating practical pathways towards skills development, entrepreneurship, and economic empowerment for girls and young mothers living in displacement settings.
Through this partnerships, we remain committed to creating spaces where girls and young mothers can be heard, supported, and equipped to shape their own futures.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Young Women's Christian Association - YWCA Kenya in Tana River and Pamoja Pwani Network for joining us in these important sessions and contributing to a day filled with learning, encouragement, dignity, and hope.

On 12th August, Badili Tana Initiative, alongside youth-led organizations, community-based organizations, development partners, and young people from across Tana River County, proudly commemorated International Youth Day in Garsen under the global theme:
"Different Contexts, Common Aspirations."
The celebration provided an inclusive platform for young people to engage in meaningful dialogue, share experiences, explore opportunities, and strengthen partnerships that contribute to sustainable youth development.
We had inspiring youth stories and dialogue sessions
💡 The Opportunity Lab, featuring discussions on: Entrepreneurship, On-the-Job Experience, Digital Mentorship, Climate Action, Digital Inclusion, Peace and Governance
The event also featured key note speakers, interactive networking sessions and collaborative discussions where participants identified priorities, and committed to driving positive change within their communities.
We extend our sincere appreciation to all partner organizations, facilitators, volunteers, and every young person who attended and contributed to making the celebration a success.
Together, we reaffirm that although young people come from different contexts, they share common aspirations for a peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous future.

𝚂𝚝𝚛𝚎𝚗𝚐𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚗𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚆𝚘𝚖𝚎𝚗'𝚜 𝙻𝚎𝚊𝚍𝚎𝚛𝚜𝚑𝚒𝚙 𝚒𝚗 𝙵𝚛𝚎𝚎𝚍𝚘𝚖 𝚘𝚏 𝚁𝚎𝚕𝚒𝚐𝚒𝚘𝚗 𝚘𝚛 𝙱𝚎𝚕𝚒𝚎𝚏 (𝙵𝚘𝚁𝙱)

From 3rd - 7th August 2026, Badili Tana Initiative (BTI) participated in the 4-Day Residential Capacity Building Training on Women and FoRB at CORAT Africa, Nairobi, supported by the Danish Minorities Center for Human Rights & Development.

Representing BTI were Racheal Benjamin (Administration and Programs Officer) and Ethan Amuma Kinoga Junior (Communications Officer), who joined partners from Kenya, Zambia, Denmark and Italy in a learning process focused on strengthening gender-responsive FoRB programming and women’s leadership.

Key highlights included:

🔹 Sharing experiences and best practices on FoRB programming
🔹 Exploring links between human rights, gender equality, and FoRB
🔹 Learning Gender Mainstreaming and Gender Analysis tools
🔹 Developing practical strategies to include women’s voices in FoRB work

A key moment was the Eastleigh Field Visit, where participants engaged directly with the community, gaining real insights into lived FoRB experiences and inclusive programming needs.
The training ended with action planning, proposal refinement, and peer feedback to strengthen women-centred FoRB initiatives.

At Badili Tana Initiative, we believe women must be active leaders in peacebuilding, not just participants.

We appreciate Danish Minorities Center for Human Rights & Development, facilitators, and partners for the opportunity. The knowledge gained will strengthen our work in peacebuilding, human rights, gender equality, and in Tana River County and beyond.

Together, we learn. Together, we lead. Together, we build more inclusive communities.

Kwa miaka mingi, mchezo wa Sadeka umekuwa zaidi ya mchezo. Umekuwa mahali pa wazee kukutana, kusalimiana, kushauriana na kuendeleza hekima iliyojenga jamii ya Tana River kwa vizazi.

Leo, kupitia 𝐊𝐢𝐤𝐚𝐨 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐭𝐮 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬, tunaheshimu utamaduni huu kwa kuunganisha mashindano ya Sadeka na mazungumzo kuhusu amani, mshikamano na mustakabali wa jamii yetu.

The launch of the Dr. Amani Komora Peace Tournament by Amani Yuda Komora was marked not only by a competitive matches and powerful peace dialogues with youth and the community, but also by a tree planting session with partners, teams, and community members. This moment reflected our shared commitment to peace, unity, environmental restoration, and community responsibility.

Beyond nurturing talent, sport provides a unique space for dialogue, especially in contexts where negative narratives such as “us vs them” can easily divide communities. Through these conversations, we continue to create opportunities for understanding, cohesion, and long-term peace.

Young people are not just participants in peace and security matters, they are key stakeholders whose voices and initiatives, when included, help build sustainable peace and development.
