The continuation of civic education outreach in Momba. We focused on sensitizing the community on the county budgeting process and the various avenues available for public participation.

We also introduced Community Score Cards as effective tools for tracking and advocating for improved WASH service delivery, and we concluded the session with a mock community score card exercise a vital task towards meaningful community engagement in civic processes.

Earlier this week in partnership with local stakeholders, we carried out a civic education session in Malomba Village focusing on women’s rights to water, the importance of safe and clean water, and why communities must own and manage their water projects for long-term sustainability.

Key Issues Raised by the Community

Exclusion from public participation: Community members reported that participation is often influenced by political affiliation, leaving many voices unheard.

Water scarcity: Malomba has gone over a week without piped water, forcing residents to rely on River Nzoia, which has led to cases of stomach illness.

Project sustainability concerns: Questions were raised about whether the community will be able to manage the water project, especially if solarization challenges persist.

Distance to water sources: Long distances continue to burden households, particularly women and children.

Blockage at the Nzoia Water Source
The community also expressed concern over being prevented from accessing and opening the Nzoia blockage

The call for an urgent multi-stakeholder meeting to allow safe and coordinated action in resolving the blockage was successful today. We sincerely thank Narera BMU, Fisheries Department, and the Coast Guard for honouring our invitation and engaging openly on the challenges facing Malomba community. We look forward to the joint follow-up meeting scheduled for Friday. European Union in Kenya InformAction Kenya KIOS CSO Network

Today, the BUSIA YOUTH WASH Parliament successfully conducted an inception meeting for the Haki Ni Yetu project in Malomba, which focuses on enhancing women’s rights to water. The meeting brought together local stakeholders, including community leaders, women representatives, persons with disability and youth groups, to discuss the water access challenges facing the area and co-create sustainable solutions.

The discussion revealed key concerns such as the long distances women and girls travel to fetch water, exposure to insecurity and gender-based violence, and the burden placed on the elderly. Importantly, the meeting emphasized that local communities hold the insights and innovations needed to address these challenges. Participants proposed solutions such as solarizing the existing water point and extending water pipelines closer to households, practical ideas that will improve safety, accessibility, and equity in water access.

This meeting marked a significant step towards strengthening community ownership and collaboration in advancing women’s water rights and promoting inclusive, sustainable development in Malomba.
