Today, the BUSIA YOUTH WASH Parliament successfully conducted an inception meeting for the Haki Ni Yetu project in Malomba, which focuses on enhancing women’s rights to water. The meeting brought together local stakeholders, including community leaders, women representatives, persons with disability and youth groups, to discuss the water access challenges facing the area and co-create sustainable solutions.
The discussion revealed key concerns such as the long distances women and girls travel to fetch water, exposure to insecurity and gender-based violence, and the burden placed on the elderly. Importantly, the meeting emphasized that local communities hold the insights and innovations needed to address these challenges. Participants proposed solutions such as solarizing the existing water point and extending water pipelines closer to households, practical ideas that will improve safety, accessibility, and equity in water access.
This meeting marked a significant step towards strengthening community ownership and collaboration in advancing women’s water rights and promoting inclusive, sustainable development in Malomba.
