Violence and abuse affect not just the women involved but also their children, families, and communities. These effects include harm to an individual's health, possibly long-term harm to children, and harm to communities such as lost work and homelessness.
Gender-based violence (GBV) is a serious violation of human rights and a life-threatening health and protection issue. When people flee their homes, they are often at greater risk of physical, s*xual and psychological violence, such as r**e, s*xual abuse, trafficking and forced prostitution.
Although anyone – women, girls, men and boys – can fall victim to violence simply because of their s*x or gender, women and girls are especially at risk. It is estimated that one in three women will experience s*xual or physical violence in their lifetime.
