A massive 7.4 magnitude earthquake just struck off Japan's Sanriku coast.

And within minutes, every fishing boat in Hachinohe port was racing in the opposite direction you'd expect.

Straight toward the open sea.

Not away from the tsunami.

Toward it.

Because every Japanese fisherman knows this rule by heart: a tsunami in shallow water will crush your boat against the harbor wall, but in deep water it slips harmlessly underneath you.

The quake hit at a terrifying shallow depth of just 10 kilometers.

A tsunami warning of up to 3 meters is now in effect for Iwate, Aomori and Hokkaido.

The shaking was felt all the way to Tokyo, where buildings swayed for nearly two minutes.

NHK flashed three words across the screen in English: "Tsunami! Evacuate!"
