Children's Day (こどもの日, Kodomo no Hi) is a Japanese national holiday which takes place annually on May 5 and is the final celebration in Golden Week. It is a day set aside to respect children's personalities and to celebrate their happiness. It was designated a national holiday by the Japanese government in 1948.

On Children's Day, families fly huge carp-shaped streamers (koinobori) outside the house and display dolls of famous warriors and other heroes inside. The carp was chosen because it symbolizes strength and success.

Also on this day, rice cakes wrapped in oak leaves and filled with sweet bean paste, called kashiwamochi, are eaten.

Greenery Day (みどりの日, Midori no Hi) is celebrated annually on May 4th. This holiday was celebrated on April 29th, but that has changed to Showa Day.

Before 1989, April 29th had been a holiday to mark the birthday of Emperor Hirohito. After his death in 1989, Greenery Day was established to honour his love for plants and nature.

This holiday celebrates nature; festivities include planting a tree and seeds by the Emperor and Empress.

Golden Week (ゴールデンウィーク, Gōruden Wīku) is one of Japan’s busiest holiday seasons, running from April 29 to May 5. It brings together several national holidays, creating an extended spring break also known as Haru no Ōgata Renkyū (春の大型連休), or the “long spring holiday.”

Pro tip: if you’re planning a trip to Japan, try to avoid this period. Prices surge, transportation gets packed, and popular spots are extremely crowded.

Shōwa Day (昭和の日, Shōwa no Hi) 🇯🇵

Celebrated on April 29, Shōwa Day honors the birthday of Emperor Shōwa (Hirohito), who reigned over Japan from 1926 to 1989. This day invites reflection on a transformative era in Japanese history, marked by both challenges and remarkable recovery.

It also marks the beginning of Japan’s beloved Golden Week, a time of rest, travel, and celebration across the country.
