As we mark the 128th Philippine Independence Day today, 12 June, the Philippine Embassy in Japan joins the Filipino community in honoring this historic occasion, celebrating the courage of our heroes, the strength of our people, and the enduring spirit of a nation that continues to rise with dignity and unity.

With this year’s theme “Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan.” (Freedom. Future. History.), we remember the sacrifices that shaped our nation and the values that continue to guide us forward.

Ms. Marilou Yamada: A Trailblazer in Community Service and Disaster Prevention

Ms. Marilou Yamada made history as the first foreign resident to become a member of Asahi town Women's Fire Brigade and the first Filipina in Toyama Prefecture to serve in this important role. Through her dedication and commitment, she has become a valuable bridge between the local Japanese community and foreign residents.

In addition to her responsibilities with the Women's Fire Brigade, Ms. Yamada actively participates in disaster prevention education by reading picture-story presentations (kamishibai) to children, helping raise awareness about fire safety and disaster preparedness from an early age. She is also involved in various fire prevention campaigns and community outreach activities in Asahi Town.

According to Mr. Junichi Hirota, Chief Specialist, the presence of foreign residents like Ms. Yamada in these initiatives makes public awareness campaigns more effective by helping reach multicultural communities and encouraging greater participation in disaster prevention efforts.

Beyond her public service work, Ms. Yamada is an active member of the Toyama Association of Filipino Communities (TAFCO), where she serves as Vice President and is a member of the Board of Directors. Through her leadership and volunteer work, she continues to promote community engagement, cultural understanding, and the welfare of Filipino residents in Toyama Prefecture.

Her contributions serve as an inspiring example of leadership, volunteerism, and community partnership, demonstrating the important role that foreign residents can play in strengthening local communities and promoting public safety.
