TIMELESS OKINAWA | Kijimuna — Tree Spirits of Gajumaru Banyan Trees

Have you ever heard of Kijimuna?
In Okinawan folklore, Kijimuna are mysterious spirits said to live within the branches of old gajumaru banyan trees. Often described as child-like beings with bright red hair, they appear throughout generations of stories passed down across the islands as familiar presences living alongside the people of Okinawa.
Some legends describe them as playful companions who help with fishing or become friends with humans. Others warn that angering them—or failing to treat nature with respect—may bring misfortune.
But beyond the legends themselves, the stories reflect Okinawa’s long-standing respect for the natural world.
For generations, these stories have encouraged people to respect the natural world rather than carelessly destroy it. Large banyan trees came to be treasured as sacred and special places, and people believed that homes living in harmony with Kijimuna would receive good fortune and prosperity.
These stories are often shared with children from a young age, carrying gentle lessons about kindness, trust, friendship, and the importance of living respectfully alongside nature.
Even today, centuries-old gajumaru trees can still be found throughout Okinawa, from the grounds of Shurijo Castle to the streets of Nago, quietly watching over the islands through generations of change since the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Perhaps that is why stories of Kijimuna continue to live on in the memories of the people of Okinawa, passed down across generations, even today.

City & Town Spotlight - Motobu Town｜Slow Island Traditions Through Maasudama Making 🌺🌿

Continuing our exploration of Motobu Town, Sesoko Island offers a chance to slow down and experience traces of traditional island life through hands-on cultural experiences connected to daily life and prayer.

📍Kaaranya, Sesoko Island, Motobu Town

Today, Sesoko Island is connected to Okinawa’s main island by bridge. But in the past, islanders had to cross the sea by boat even for everyday necessities. Life on the island was shaped by the idea of living with what was available nearby.

At Kaaranya, visitors can take part in a traditional maasudama (protective salt amulet) making experience, creating small protective charms using local plants such as shell ginger and pandanus. These charms were traditionally made to pray for safety in daily life and at sea.

The experience takes around an hour, offering a quiet moment to work with natural materials while learning about older ways of life in Okinawa. Beyond maasudama making, Kaaranya also offers deeper cultural experiences such as traditional folk craft workshops and island-style meals.

For those hoping to explore the culture more deeply, interpretation support can also be arranged with advance notice.

Rather than simply sightseeing, Sesoko Island offers a chance to slow down and reflect on the relationship between daily life, nature, and prayer in Okinawa.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has lifted all tsunami warnings and advisories that had been issued for the Miyako and Yaeyama regions of Okinawa Prefecture and the Okinawa main island region at noon.
Some tidal changes are expected to continue for a while, so please be careful when approaching the sea!
