Japan’s traffic rules have changed! Default speed limit on residential roads reduced to 30 km/h

If you’re visiting Okinawa and planning to rent a car, please take note! ⚠️
On September 1, 2026, Japan’s amended Road Traffic Act Enforcement Order came into effect, lowering the default speed limit on residential roads from 60 km/h to 30 km/h.
If you’re unfamiliar with the new rule, you could exceed the speed limit without realizing it.

📢 On residential roads without a center line or other separation between opposing traffic, the default speed limit for motor vehicles has been reduced from 60 km/h to 30 km/h.

💡 What are “residential roads”?
・Roads without a center line or other separation between opposing traffic
・Relatively narrow roads mainly used by local residents

💡 What does this mean for travelers using rental cars?
・On roads without a posted speed limit, the default limit may now be 30 km/h instead of 60 km/h
・Depending on how far the speed limit is exceeded and the circumstances of any resulting accident, drivers may face criminal charges

💡 What about other roads?
・On general roads with a center line, designated traffic lanes, or a physical barrier separating opposing traffic, the default speed limit generally remains 60 km/h
・If a speed limit is indicated by a road sign or road marking, always follow the posted limit
・On Okinawa’s expressways, the speed limit is 80 km/h throughout

Think you know zenzai? Okinawa does it a little differently.

While zenzai in mainland Japan is often served warm with sweet azuki beans, in Okinawa, it’s a refreshing summer treat made with fluffy shaved ice over sweetened red kidney beans, often topped with shiratama.

The light, icy texture pairs with the gentle sweetness and soft bite of the beans, making Okinawa zenzai a perfect way to cool down between sightseeing stops. TIMELESS OKINAWA | Ashimiji Bushi — A Song of Work and Purpose

Behind every harvest and every object shaped by hand are hours of work that often go unseen.

Ashimiji Bushi is an Okinawan folk song that gives voice to everyday effort. Created in 1928, it sings of the joy and value found in working with dedication and taking pride in what one does.

Its lyrics tell us that the satisfaction of hard work is something only the person who has done it can truly know. They also speak of saving little by little, raising and educating children, and working for the good of others. Together, these verses offer lessons about work, responsibility, and hope for the future.

The song reflects the labor that has long supported life in Okinawa—from tending fields and gathering crops to the many forms of handwork carried out day after day.

As Okinawan communities grew overseas during the 20th century, Ashimiji Bushi also traveled far beyond the islands. For immigrants who were building new lives in places such as Hawaii and South America, its message of steady effort is said to have offered encouragement through the hardships of work, while its familiar melody helped them remain connected to their culture and home.

Ways of working have changed since the song was written, yet its message remains relevant today: there is meaning in steady effort, pride in doing one’s part, and value in the work that supports everyday life.

Still sung and performed today, Ashimiji Bushi carries this message forward—a reminder that Okinawa’s culture lives not only in festivals and historic places, but also in the work of ordinary days.
