Hi! Just want to inform Foreign Residents living in Gifu about something I did last week.

Pickup from meeting with Gifu police

-Discussed with the Gifu police about the collected opinions and concerns from foreign residents (good and bad opinions in a very direct manner)
-The Gifu police knows that times are changing (aging population and globalization) and that they have to improve on how to effectively communicate with foreigners.
-We talked about the word “gaijin”. “Gaijin” sometimes have a negative meaning. Gaikokujin is a more neutral and somewhat more formal term widely used in the Japanese government and in media. So if a police or any government official calls you a ‘gaijin’, patiently tell them to refer to you as a ‘gaikokujin’.
-I asked them to improve their homepage and make it easy to navigate
-If a police knocks on your door, don’t panic. The neighbor police officer is probably there for their “Junkai renraku” or police courtesy call.

- There is a translator (english/tagalog) available on weekdays at Kani Police station. Ask for the translator as necessary.
