【Regular Meeting on 22nd May】
FRIENDS FROM AFAR — PIONEER FRIDAY, MEETING #446
Good evening, Tokyo — and welcome to Meeting #446 at Aoyama Lifelong Learning Hall.
The theme came from the very first chapter of Confucius& #39;s Analects:
有朋自遠方来、不亦楽乎
"Friends come from afar. Is it not a joy?"
And they came. Seven guests joined us tonight — two from Japan, two from across Asia,
three from North America.
Word of the Evening: Evolve / 進化する
Table Topics, hosted by Akiko, ran bilingually — six speakers, six perspectives, one shared
room.
Prepared Speakers:
Chika opened with "Why no rhyming?" — an Engaging Humor project. A small question
about language. A room full of laughter.
Wesley followed with "ABC — Social speech is simple," a Persuasive Speaking project. His
framework was so clear that any beginner could use it the next day.
Chester Chambers, PhD, our Special Guest, is a university professor and researcher from
Texas. He comes from District 50, where many people work at TOYOTA. He is the 2025
District 50 International Speech Contest champion.
This is his very first trip to Japan, with his wife and son. Tonight was only his second day in
the country — and he came to Pioneer to give us a speech.
His speech theme was "5 Good Minutes." He included a story from TOYOTA& #39;s Lean
Manufacturing. Yes — it really is a joy when friends come from afar.
Afterwards, Vivek interviewed him. We all learned something new.
And then — a Pioneer first.
Ten years ago, TM Kyoko Minamoto stood for the first time at a Pioneer meeting. Tonight,
she stood again — as the incoming District Director of District 76, all of Japan. She is the
first Pioneer member ever to hold that role. Pioneer presented her with a bouquet. The
applause kept going.
This is what EVOLVE looks like. Ten years. One room. One path.
