The latest data on gender equity in Japan is disappointing to say the least. Japan ranked 123rd on gender equity in Business. What makes this number all the more maddening is that Japanese women are among the best educated in the world and yet the perception that they should be treated equally in business has still not penetrated Japanese society.

That is why Tachi-Aoi, Japan's first and only women-centric incubator is so critical. Japanese women need to be more than encouraged to be leaders in the startup ecosystem, but given the pervasive gender obstacles that they face, need to start their careers in an environment that is completely geared to accommodate them. At Tachi-Aoi, they will find that environment where they can fulfill their ambitions. For themselves and for Japan as a whole.

TACHI-AOI MISSION STATEMENT

Tachi-Aoi Foundation is dedicated to empowering women and building up Japan's startup ecosystem by providing an entry point through a nonprofit educational institution. Through the creation and delivery of appropriate educational material and contribution of Japan's first women-centric incubator, Tachi-Aoi will give nascent female entrepreneurs the tools professionally and personally to succeed, recognizing the significant challenges currently facing Japanese women.

Our overarching goal is to be an innovative, safe, dynamic and results-oriented business incubator where ambitious and creative Japanese women are empowered to explore the transformation of their intellectual capital into vibrant startup companies. We aim to integrate our activities into the existing startup and social ecosystem and thereby boost all related organizations. Participants in Tachi-Aoi programs will become recognized for their successes and contributions to Japan and future entrepreneurs. In doing this, Tachi-Aoi will provide an avenue to advance the role of women in Japanese society and economy.

One of the criticisms leveled at those who promote gender equity in Japan is that expanding women's economic opportunities will exacerbate the severe demographic crisis in Japan. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Empirical data from societies in which women have been empowered socially and economically demonstrate conclusively that the birth rate RISES, not falls once women's roles are expanded. Gender equity must be part of the solution of falling birth rates for Japan.

At Tachi Aoi we will work with the families of our Fellows to talk about work/family life balance and the changing roles of both partners from the traditional stay-at-home mother model. We seek to promote Japanese social policies that provide adequate child care, paternal leave policies and other changes that will allow Japan to thrive.
