The absent Gavel
There was once a Mason named Brother Caleb — skilled, sincere, and once steady in his lodge. But over time, life pressed in. Work grew heavier, family busier, and the hours once reserved for the Craft were quietly claimed by the world.
He told no one. Just stopped showing up.
Months passed.
One evening, as Caleb sat alone, staring at unfinished plans on his desk, there was a knock at the door. It was Brother James, carrying a small bundle wrapped in cloth.
“I brought you something,” he said.
Inside was a working gavel — worn, but polished.
Caleb smiled faintly. “I haven’t earned this in a while.”
James replied, “That’s not why I brought it. I brought it because the lodge is missing your knock. And maybe you’re missing the stone that only we can help you shape.”
There was silence… then a quiet nod.
The next meeting, Brother Caleb’s seat was no longer empty. His tools, once set down, were back in hand.
The lodge was whole again — and so was he.
