Canavan in Japan AGWM Missionary to Japan Justin Canavan has been an AGWM Missionary to Japan since 2019, serving a total of three years in country.

He served in Young Adults and media ministry at two vibrant, growing, Holy-Spirit empowered international churches and in partnership with Asia Pacific Media. God grew both churches exponentially and he saw people from Japan, Mongolia, and Northern Asia come to know Jesus! And he believes God wants to do so much more in this next term! For his second term, he feels like God has called him to help plant a local Chi Alpha out of ICA Tokyo Church (a vibrant, growing international church-located in the heart of Tokyo) to reach the 27,000 college students across the street at the University of Tokyo. This is part of a strategic, Holy Spirit-empowered plan to grow the local church and continue reaching the over 124 million who do not know Jesus in Japan. Further, he plans to continue working with Asia Pacific Media in resourcing and training Japanese churches in media ministry and digital outreach.

A University Graduate in Tokyo Decides to Follow Jesus 🥹

✨ She felt rejected. Jesus showed her she was deeply loved.

Before Chie knew Jesus, she experienced a lot of hurt from the people around her. Because of those experiences, she often felt rejected and betrayed.

Little by little, she lost confidence in herself. She didn’t know how to trust people anymore. She felt lonely and began questioning her own value and what she could do with her life.

Everything started to change when her father’s friend invited her to ICA Tokyo, where she began attending church and joined the Life Group.

She still had so many questions about life, people, and why she had experienced so much pain. Then, at her graduation ceremony, a Bible verse written in a letter caught her attention. She says that she felt power that she had never felt before.

That moment led her to begin reading the Bible in search of answers. Whenever she had questions, she asked the leaders at church, and they continually reminded her of one life-changing truth: how much Jesus loves her.

As she kept reading Scripture, she slowly found answers to the struggles she had carried for so long. She began to feel that Jesus was calling her.

The more she learned about Jesus and His teachings, the more she understood His incredible love. She realized He was teaching her things she had never understood before.

Because of His love, Chie made the decision to accept Jesus, follow Him, and become a Christian. ❤️ And recently, she got water baptized, publicly declaring that she chooses to follow Jesus 🔥

Today, she continues to experience God’s presence, His guidance, and His power changing her little by little. And now she knows this with confidence:

With Jesus, she is no longer walking alone.

Now is the time to step out in faith. Now is the time to do something in Japan that has never been done before.

🚨 GOD IS MOVING IN TOKYO! 🇯🇵🔥

Over the past year, ICA Tokyo has grown by 30%. And we’re continually asking, “How do we make more space for more people?” 🙌

Here’s what God has been doing:

✨ 50+ people have raised their hands for salvation
💧 10 people baptized—including 4 Japanese & 2 Chinese
🇯🇵 20% of our Sunday attendance is Japanese
📱 People are finding our English-speaking church through Google & Instagram
🎓 520 CO university ministry is growing as students invite their friends
❤️ One salvation already through 520 CO
🏗️ $1M+ already raised toward our $6M building project!

This isn’t just about numbers. Every number represents a person. Every story represents a life changed by Jesus.

God is making a way for more people in Tokyo to encounter Jesus, find community, grow in faith, and discover hope.

God is pouring out His Spirit across Japan, and we believe this is just the beginning of a great move of God.

Less than 1% of Japan knows Jesus, which means millions have never had the opportunity to hear the Gospel. But we’re believing that this next season will be different.
