Turtle or tortoise — what’s the difference? 🐢

Although they belong to the same broader group, turtles and tortoises are adapted to very different environments.

Tortoises are built for life on land, with sturdy legs and domed shells. Turtles are adapted for life in water, with streamlined shells and webbed feet or flippers.

Different adaptations, different habitats, but one important role: protecting biodiversity and keeping our ecosystems healthy.

Learn the difference. Understand their needs. Help protect them.

Learn more. Protect better.

Have you ever wondered what’s inside a turtle’s shell?

From the lungs and heart to the liver, stomach, intestines, kidneys and bladder, every organ plays an important role in keeping a turtle alive and healthy.

Understanding turtle anatomy helps us better understand their needs, recognize potential health concerns, and handle them with greater care.

The more we understand, the better we can protect.

The correct way to hold a turtle matters.

When handling a turtle, gentle support is essential. Use both hands, support both sides of the shell and the underside, and keep the turtle level and steady.

A secure, calm hold helps reduce stress and prevents unnecessary injury.

Small actions can make a big difference in protecting wildlife.

Learn. Protect. Conserve.

Sea turtles are protected by law in many countries, but illegal harvesting of their eggs, meat, and shells remains a major threat.

The reality is that in many coastal communities, families face difficult choices. When livelihoods are limited, collecting turtle eggs or hunting turtles may provide much-needed income or food.

That's why conservation isn't just about protecting wildlife, it's also about supporting people.

Through our community-based conservation programs, SEE Turtles helps create sustainable alternatives, from ecotourism and beach patrols to paid conservation jobs and community grants.

🐢 The Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) is one of the most iconic sea turtle species and plays a vital role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems by grazing on seagrass beds and supporting ocean biodiversity.

Despite its importance, this endangered species faces growing threats from fishing gear, plastic pollution, and habitat degradation. Sadly, only a small fraction of hatchlings survive to adulthood.

Protecting green sea turtles starts with simple actions—from reducing plastic waste to supporting responsible fishing practices.

Every action counts. Together, we can protect sea turtles and preserve our oceans for future generations.

🐢💙 One call... One life saved.

A juvenile Green Sea Turtle was rescued after Sheikh Bader Yaseen, President of The Thagher Al-Urdun Fishermen Cooperative Association, contacted JSCT upon finding the turtle with barnacles covering its shell.

Following JSCT's scientific guidance, the barnacles were safely removed, the turtle was assessed, and successfully released back into the Red Sea.

This rescue is another example of how cooperation between fishermen and conservationists helps protect Jordan's marine biodiversity and safeguard sea turtles for future generations.

Together, every report can save a life.
