11/4 Update Our international partners are on the ground assessing, helping with the cleanup and helping us source what we need to keep everyone fed and healthy. Please be patient as its super busy right now- a lot of moving parts, as the saying goes. . Got some pics and more to come but just cannot spend time uploading right now- soon come. Thanks to all the supporters who have donated. Most important-- all paws are safe! One Love, Ellie.
11/1 update: We want to thank all the national and international organizations who have reached out to us and the other shelters and rescues in Jamaica. An outpouring of support and assistance is all in process and on its way. Conditions across the island range from OK to utterly devastated. Relief shipments and supplies are beginning to arrive. Mobay was particularly hard hit along with devastation in the parishes along the South Coast, but serious damage also extends as far east as St. Mary. (edit: There is also damage in the eastern parishes especially from the heavy rains- landslides, roads washed out, sinkholes opened, roofs damaged and board houses damaged badly).
To those who are asking how to donate, This is our site where you will find a donate link- www.theanimalhousejamaica.org You can use paypal OR use a credit card to donate (without needing to use paypal). Directly, you can also enter our email address in your paypal account. It is: [email protected]
We just set up a Venmo for those having issues with paypal -The Animal House Jamaica Incorporated
For other ways to donate, please message directly or email us and we will respond as soon as possible. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH.
NOW, International teams of expert animal-welfare focused first responders have mobilized and The Jamaican government is welcoming the assistance from these trained and experienced professionals. We will have a team working with us on the ground in the next two days. We were able to get our driver up to the shelter yesterday and indeed everyone is ok-- they apparently were spared the most intense winds but it was a mess and they had already done a lot of clearing tree debris and clean-up is ongoing. For that, we are so grateful and relieved. Our satellite location is covered in large fallen trees and part of the property still flooded. The animals are all being kept inside right now. Its very hard to get in and out of the front, much less the back.
As you can imagine, it is a hectic time, with a lot of moving parts. To those who want to assist, Cash is most needed by us and by ALL the organizations working on relief. Please also be wary of the many fake appeals, charities and websites that have popped up.
I will try and get an official list of approved/officially sanctioned relief organizations who are on the ground or on their way and post it on our feed. (ODPEM probably also has a list up). No power is expected for at least 2 weeks, maybe longer. There are long lines for gas (if you can even find it). Our shelter has a generator. (edit: 70% or more of the island's water is off as of this morning now 11/3, with very serious infrastructure damage in the west, and turbidity issues all over. )
To all who have sent or are going to send donations, thank you so much. I will also update you as I am able but I need to stay focused on my role in assisting the efforts underway, so please understand if I don't post every day. One Love and to those in Jamaica please stay safe.
