UNITED STUDENT MOVEMENT HISTORICAL OVERVIEW
The United Student Movement began with a handful of students in 1935 under the influence of Bender L. It then had one executive and was referred to as U.S.M. with the objectives of the first constitution which were to aid in fostering a good school spirit, to promote physical health education which was then lacking and to help in the development of the student body as a whole. Over the years the objectives of the United Student Movement have been clarified to encourage the development of democratic leadership, to provide a well-organized channel between students and the administration, in collaboration with the objectives and policies of the college. Up until 1977 faculty members were granted associate membership with the movement. By April 1981 an amendment to the constitution stated that no provision was for the associate membership of the faculty and staff of the USM. As the years rolled by the USM grew in numbers and effectiveness. Students such as Wesley, Fletecters, Harriots and William put new life enthusiasm and direction in the organization. It was now becoming a well-defined association that attracted faculty and staff’s interest and support. It began to develop various projects that the student body accepted as a means of working to accomplish something as a corporate body. The fame of USM eventually grew, left our shores and thus attracted foreign students from several other Caribbean territories, many of which had a role in the administration of USM. The United Student Movement in the 40’s saw the leadership of Dr. Lloyd Dayes and Dr. Alvin Mclean. The 60’s saw leadership of Dr. Trevor Gardener and Dr. Newton Hoilette. The early 70’s saw the suspension of USM as an organized body for about two years. After a revision of the constitution and an understanding by the students as to the proper running of the Movement it was reorganized and back up for operation. The 1960’s and 70’s experienced a very strong house system with very strong house leaders and a very vibrant organization with high spirits. Various activities including student of the year competition was also organized. The late nineteen seventies and early eighties saw a reduction in interest in the USM and its activities. This however, soon changed because of the motivating character that seemed to characterize the USM in its selection and ex*****on of worthwhile projects. As the years roll on the United Student Movement acted, they stood strong, saw themselves as eagles and saw presidents such as Robert ‘Big Rob’ Miller, Keane Adams, Donald English, Kirkwood Parkinson, Mr. Darren Murphy and will now forge on under the leadership of Mr. Davey Haughton. USM stands as a platform to create student led change. We stand together declaring that we must.
