Yesterday the OneCity Consortium proudly launched the OneCity Explorer, a groundbreaking platform designed to map access to services and quality of life in Jamaican cities.

This innovative initiative is set to transform urban planning by integrating youth participation, open data, and collaborative partnerships.

By empowering communities, policymakers, and urban planners with data-driven insights, we aim to foster inclusive, equitable, and sustainable urban development.

📊 Key Highlights from the Launch:

▪️The Explorer platform helps visualize socio-economic and environmental data to guide targeted interventions.

▪️This data will help to pinpoint issues around access to basic services like water, sanitation, and mobility which poll results show are top priorities for improving quality of life in Jamaican communities.

▪️The tool will also help to address issues like informal settlements, flood risk, air pollution, and youth engagement in urban spaces.

👉 Watch the full event replay to see how this tool can help shape the future of urban planning and empower youth voices in Jamaica and beyond.

We are happy to share that the recent co-design workshop for Study Two of the OneCity Initiative was a resounding success!

Last year we announced the OneCity Initiative in partnership with the CAPRI - Caribbean Policy Research Institute Caribbean Policy Research Institute (CAPRI), Mona GeoInformatics Institute and Fight for Peace which aims to identify new pathways that leverage digital technology for meaningful youth engagement in urban governance.

This Study Two workshop is part of the ongoing research process, bringing together stakeholders to map Jamaica’s public participation ecosystem, reflect on the success factors for effective citizen engagement, and co-design frameworks for more inclusive collaboration between communities and institutions.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated and contributed their insights to this important initiative!

In our "Building Trust in an Increasingly Digital World" forum last Wednesday Danielle Archer, Executive Director of National Integrity Action
shared some valuable insights with us on why there is a trust deficit in Jamaica, especially as it regards digital adoption.

Archer explains that a lack of transparency, accountability, and alignment with public values has eroded confidence in leadership and fuelled hesitancy in adopting digital solutions,. emphasizing that meaningful digital adoption will not happen unless leadership actively works to address the issues that led to distrust

At SlashRoots we believe in a whole-of-society approach to national development and see it as strategically advantageous for our national project.

When more societal actors, including members of civil society organisations, contribute to solving our problems, we can accelerate our learning, expand our capacity and increase the momentum of our progress.

That is the basis of the call for civil society actors to participate in Jamaica's open government process as part of the global Open Government Partnership initiative.

Your participation is crucial, as it ensures greater accountability and transparency in government.
