Thank you ITV Channel TV for this lovely piece on our Pool Physio sessions!

It's so wonderful to be able to run these sessions for our clients to be able to do pool exercises and swimming.

EYECAN client, Jenny, tells ITV: "if I wanted to swimming I'd have to have someone with me in the water, this is great I can come and do some aqua with the team here and then do some swimming"

We also want to give a BIG thank you to Lions Club of Jersey for their very generous donation earlier this year which has helped to fund our pool physio sessions.

We would also like to thank CNS Neuro Physio Rehab & Elderly care and Jersey Cheshire Home for providing these sessions for our clients.

We're in need of a volunteer to pick up clients from town or outskirts around 9.30am to bring them to our social club at our Westlea Center on Thursday mornings for 10.30am and then to take them home again at 2.00pm

Today is World Sight Day, a day to raise awareness about the importance of eye care and avoidable visual impairment, and to draw attention to those living with sight loss.

We hope you'll join us in spreading the word on taking care of your eyes with these tip tips:

- Book regular eye tests. Some conditions can develop gradually without noticeable early symptoms. Regular eye examinations can help detect problems early.

- Eat a balanced diet. A good nutritional lifestyle will benefit your eyes as well as your health. Eating leafy greens, fruits and vegetables, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids helps to support eye health

- Avoid smoking. Smoking can increase the risk of eye conditions, reducing or stopping smoking can help lower your risk of developing vision loss.

- Wear sunglasses and protective eye wear. Protecting your eyes against damage from the sun, or physical injury, is important way of looking after your eyes. Wear sunglasses that protect against UVA and UVB radiation, and wear protective glasses to keep your eyes safe against objects.

It was so great to have Beavers up at our centre recently. Our community team, led by Agnetta, taught them about sight loss conditions, and explained different types of equipment people living with sight loss use, which they were able to try themselves. They even had an introduction to Braille!

Pride of Jersey - Vote for Eleanor McLachlan!

EYECAN Client, Eleanor McLachlan, has been nominated for Ambassador of the Year in this year's Pride of Jersey.

A “remarkable young woman” who dedicates her time and uses her personal experience to raise awareness about sight loss is being recognised for “inspiring young people with disabilities to be proud of who they are and confident of what they can achieve”.

Eleanor McLachlan (17) has been nominated for Ambassador of the Year by Sarah Shaw for all the work she has done for EYECAN. In 2015, she proudly snipped the ribbon to open the charity’s Westlea Centre following its rebrand from the Jersey Blind Society to EYECAN.

In 2022, she won the Variety Club of Jersey’s Child of the Year award for academia. More recently, Miss McLachlan met the Duchess of Edinburgh and “helped showcase the charity’s work and the experiences of Islanders living with sight loss”.

Mrs Shaw said: “As a young adult, she has become an inspiring advocate for others, using her own experiences to educate the public, challenge misconceptions and demonstrate that sight loss should never be a barrier to achieving ambitions.”

Our Community team recently participated in 2 days of training this week with Andy Fisher from Optima Low Vision Services, updating on current low vision assessment practice.

We were delighted to share this training opportunity with Chantelle from Guernsey Blind Association - Vision Support Centre and enjoyed another opportunity to work together across both islands to continue to develop sight loss support across the Channel Islands.

Thank you Andy for a really interesting and comprehensive training which our team are already putting to good use!

It was wonderful to attend the Association of Jersey Charities event on Friday, and connect with so many other brilliant charities in Jersey. Thank you to everyone who came over for a chat ☺️

Since 1886, EYECAN has been supporting islanders with sight loss and with the help of legacy donations, we hope to continue the work we’re doing.
