Dear Gurkha Welfare Trust Jersey (GWTJ) supporters: We hope you and your families are keeping well. GWTJ continue providing significant support to GWT UK with us funding approx. 20% of their "WASH" programme across Nepal, delivering sustainable access to clean water and improved hygiene practices across rural communities in Nepal. We are pleased to publish our 2024-25 Completed Projects Report and an overview of the 2025-2026 projects we are funding with support from Jersey Overseas Aid (who kindly double the amount we raise each year); which can be downloaded here: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/9lk096mw2noddwso7ca2r/ALY-ZJWOK-GCN2H3isRyNhQ?rlkey=hw9v94pomkg10zfc90yppgnl5&dl=0.

Dear Gurkha Welfare Trust Jersey (GWTJ) supporters: We hope you and your families are keeping well. We are pleased to publish the GWTJ July 2023 to June 2024 financial statements & Annual Report for your information, which you can download here: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/299bdsc8mmf8hcvywwgmh/ACRYOtXKtl2cJA8_DQRRwbg?rlkey=tt369mhjgqlfntc845uq4glaa&dl=0

Highlights of our last financial year include attracting a major new Jersey Charitable Foundation sponsor whom wish to remain anonymous and receiving another £202K donation from X-Press Feeders/Sea Consortium Ltd, a major international shipping and logistics company with close links to Jersey. This funded a new secondary school in Nepal completed during Summer 2024. These new and very generous sponsors enabled us to nearly triple our 2023-24 funding and therefore substantially increase number of projects in Nepal we have been able to support. From our formation in January 2015 up to July 2024 GWTJ are delighted to have raised over £1.5 million pounds aiding Gurkha families & villages in Nepal, thanks to your valued support which we hope to continue receiving.

Date for your diaries: On evening of Thursday 23 October we will be holding our 2025 Bhat dinner in the Golden Apple Suite at Pomme d’Or Hotel, in presence of our joint Patrons Lieutenant Governor His Excellency Vice Admiral Jeremy Kyd CBE and Dr Karen Kyd. We are completing final details and booking details will be announced soon. Watch out for our Supporters Newsletter being sent in near future to your email or by post with more updates.

We hope to see you again in the not too-distant future. Until then our best wishes for your continued well-being, from all GWTJ Trustee’s and Committee.

We thank our major donor Express Feeders Sea Consortium, a major international shipping and logistics company with close links to Jersey, who donated some £202,000 funding building of Shree Dharmapur Secondary School; and thank Jersey Overseas Aid for their continued support tripling funds raised by GWTJ Supporters, who funded another five Water & Sanitation projects in addition to the three Water & Sanitation projects paid for by GWTJ Supporters donations.

This year marked the 10th anniversary of the GWTJ’s formation as a Jersey Charity at the end of 2014. Apart from £50,000 we sent for initial emergency aid supplies (tents, food, medical packs) in the immediate aftermath of the April 2015 earthquake, by July 2024 our fundraising had raised over £1.5 million pounds, resulting in the completed construction of six schools, getting some 3,000 Gurkha children back into school, the construction of three Community Centres plus Water and Sanitation projects for twenty-four Gurkha villages (benefiting approximately 10,800 villagers). All of these have delivered tangible life-enhancing benefits to remote Nepalese communities.

Our GWTJ July 2023 to June 2024 Annual Report & Financial Statement will be also published in near future when these have been signed off.

We hope to continue receiving your valued support and seeing you again in the not too-distant future. Until then our best wishes for your continued well-being and wishing you a very Happy Christmas, from all GWTJ Trustee’s and Committee.

Gurkha Welfare Trust Jersey (GWTJ) 2024 Ben Nevis Trek Report: During the weekend 6th – 9th June, a team of 18 intrepid volunteers embarked on an exhilarating fundraising trek up Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles standing tall at 1,345 meters. Despite the daunting forecast predicting gale-force winds, blizzard-like conditions, and hailstorms, the spirit of adventure and commitment to a worthy cause propelled our team forward.

The group arrived in Fort William with a mix of anticipation and trepidation, prepared to face whatever challenges lay ahead. On Friday, a preliminary trek was organized to test the conditions and gauge everyone's readiness for the main ascent. This shorter trek saw 17 of our volunteers climb one-third of the Mountain Track, a journey that took four hours. They were met with an unexpected yet familiar challenge—midges! These tiny, biting insects were out in full force, adding another layer of difficulty to the trek. Despite the midges' best efforts to dampen spirits, the trial run was a success, setting the stage for the main event on Saturday.

On Saturday, 14 brave volunteers, undeterred by the harsh weather, set out to conquer Ben Nevis. The courage, strength, and camaraderie of the group were truly inspiring as they made their ascent. Their determination to reach the summit, despite the adverse conditions (-12C with visibility at times lunder 30 metres), was a testament to their dedication to supporting the Gurkha community. In just under four hours, they triumphantly summited at top of Ben Nevis. The descent was equally challenging, but the team’s perseverance saw them safely return to the base of the mountain, completing the round trip in a commendable eight hours.

This incredible achievement highlights the extraordinary efforts our volunteers are willing to undertake to make a difference. Stay tuned for more updates on our adventures and fundraising achievements (Scafell Pike – May 2025). Together, we can continue to make a profound impact on the lives of Gurkhas, their families & their villages in Nepal who have given so much. Thank you for your continued support and well done to our 2024 Trekkers! 👏🤝😀😀

What is happening?
Trustees of The Gurkha Welfare Trust Jersey (“GWTJ”) are organising a group trek expedition up the 1,345 metres of Ben Nevis: the highest mountain in Scotland, the United Kingdom and the British Isles. This will take place on the 6-9 June 2024.

The trek will follow the Ben Nevis Mountain Track: a challenging and sustained climb with amazing views along the route. This path will test your endurance as you wind your way up to the summit taking 7-8 hours in total. Accommodation will be nearby in Fort William. Flights will be out of Jersey on Thursday 6 June 2024 and return to Jersey on Sunday 9 June 2024.

Why are we doing it?
To raise funding for GWTJ projects in Nepal and awareness of the GWTJ. Since 2014 GWTJ has raised over £1million for Gurkha projects in Nepal, thanks to your support and that of Jersey Overseas Aid (“JOA”). We have an ongoing commitment with our 2024-25 projects. Including 8no. clean water and sanitation projects (3no. will be GWTJ funded with 5no. JOA funded) supporting over 3,000 Nepalese people in over 540 households, and a school project for circa. 600 Nepalese children.

What do we want?
You! If you are interested in a fun, challenging, and rewarding weekend, then sign up with us. The cost will be £650: a £300 deposit by 15 December 2023 and a final £350 balance to be paid in March 2024. £100 of this is a direct donation to the GWTJ which will be tripled by JOA. Whilst you will need to provide your own equipment / kit for the trek (we will give you the kit list required), the overall trip will be organised for you by GWTJ Trustees.
