We hope everyone had a very happy Liberation Day today! It is always a real privilege and honour for us to take part in the annual reenactment and march past ceremony alongside the Royal Jersey Militia Army Cadets on this very important day in the Channel Islands’ history.

We will be continuing the Liberation weekend with a living history display at Strongpoint Corbiere tomorrow afternoon with the CIOS Jersey (C.I. Occupation Society) from 2-5pm - come and say hello, and get a closer look at the uniforms and equipment of the men who arrived in Jersey on this momentous day in 1945!

It was a huge pleasure for members of the group to support D’Auvergne School with their Liberation Afternoon Tea Party yesterday evening. Great to see local schools continuing to celebrate and pass on the importance of the Liberation for future generations!

May 4, 1945 - “W-Day”

Following the order to “Stand To” the day before, May 4th, 1945 marked W-Day (W meaning Warning) for the launch of Operation Nestegg, the codename for the Liberation of the Channel Islands. All units and personnel that were to be involved in the operation were marshalled to Plymouth to prepare for imminent embarkation, including recalling of leave to those who had it!

Of particular significance to Force 135 on W-Day was the short-notice issuing of its unique formation sign, the coat of arms of Jersey and Guernsey, consisting of three golden leopards over a red shield; the leopards of the Channel Islands represent their places as remnants of the medieval Duchy of Normandy and as Crown Dependencies.

This insignia was issued to members of all three services of the Armed Forces (the British Army, the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force) participating in Operation Nestegg. It was worn on the left shoulder sleeve of the British uniform only, to represent the leopards moving forwards. The formation sign was also painted on all ground vehicles within the Task Force, in place of a divisional or brigade-level formation sign. Stencils to paint the insignia were provided by REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers).

Force 135 now had received its recognisable identity as an operational formation. Brigadier Snow, General Officer Commanding (OC) of Force 135 made a lengthy final planning conference for the operation, one which ran well into the next morning.

The stage for the Liberation was set.

Weekend plans? We’ve spotted a good one.

The Channel Islands Occupation Society are reopening the bunker at Strongpoint Corbière this Sunday – and if you’re even mildly into Jersey’s history, it’s worth your time.

Operation Hardtack, living history reenactors, kit displays… it’s shaping up to be a fascinating afternoon.

We’ll be open too (with lunch, coffee and a wander through the tunnels if you fancy it), so you can make a proper day of it.

Start at Corbière. Continue underground.
Or the other way round – history works both ways.

Supporting Jersey’s story, together.

“OPERATION HARDTACK 28” LIVING HISTORY EVENT
Strongpoint Corbiere
2pm-5pm, Sunday 15 February 2026

Following our popular on-location Operation Hardtack 28 living history event at the Wolf’s Lair last month, we will once again be portraying British commandos at Strongpoint Corbiere this Sunday!

Supporting our friends from the Channel Islands Occupation Society (CIOS) at their bunker opening, this is a great opportunity to see authentic British commando equipment, uniforms and weapons - and learn about the only commando raid on Jersey during the Second World War - all while getting to explore a superbly restored German bunker complex!*

We hope to see you at Strongpoint Corbiere this Sunday!

*Admission to Strongpoint Corbiere is £10 for adults, and free for under 16s and CIOS members. All funds directly support the CIOS’ volunteers in continuing their important mission in preserving Jersey’s German fortifications and Occupation heritage. For more information, please visit the CIOS Jersey (C.I. Occupation Society) Facebook group.
