📍 Urbino, Italy | MAST Final Conference

Today, we officially closed the journey of MAST – MAking Sustainable Tourism Possible 🌱

After months of joint work, research, testing and exchange, partners came together to present the results and outcomes of the MAST project — developed to support the accommodation sector, especially SMEs, in understanding and applying sustainability principles in line with ISO 21401:2018 🏡📘

The final event showcased inspiring contributions on sustainable tourism from:
🎓 Prof. Salvador Anton Clavé (University Rovira i Virgili, Spain)
🌍 European Public Law Organization – EPLO (Greece)
🌱 Territori Sostenibili (Italy)

We were especially glad to hear from Alessia Mariotti, presenting the Libeccio project, implemented by the Centre for Advanced Studies in Tourism, highlighting how MAST results can connect with other initiatives and actions across the Mediterranean 🤝

The conference concluded with a round table discussion among MAST partners, reflecting on achieved results, shared lessons learned and how MAST deliverables can be further amplified beyond the project’s study phase.

✨ MAST comes to an end, but its contribution to sustainable tourism continues — through tools, knowledge and collaboration.

📍 Urbino, Italy

As we approach the final moments of the MAST project, partners met in Urbino to complete final activities and prepare for the MAST Final Conference.

Our visit to Tenuta Santi Giacomo e Filippo reminded us what sustainability truly means in the accommodation sector — organic and local production, respect for place, and meaningful experiences for guests.

We are wrapping up this journey the same way it started:
🌱 with sustainability,
🤝 with collaboration,
🏡 with real-life examples that inspire change.

🇪🇺✨ MAST in Slovenia!
Our project was recently presented at the Annual Assembly of the Slovenian Hotel Managers Association, where national tourism stakeholders explored how MAST can support greener and more resilient accommodation services across the country.

🌿 The Association’s President introduced the MAST Sustainability Protocol and the Online Self-Assessment Tool, both aligned with ISO 21401 standards. Hoteliers were encouraged to join the upcoming testing phase — their feedback will help shape tools that truly work for SMEs.

🏨 The Tourism and Hospitality Chamber of Slovenia will soon invite its members to participate, followed by a dedicated session to gather insights from accommodation providers.

Together, we’re moving the Mediterranean tourism sector toward a more sustainable future.

Joint Activities of the Euro-Med MAST and Libeccio Projects 🇪🇺✨

The Euro-Med MAST and Libeccio projects joined forces last week for their second joint capacity-building event on innovation, held in San Benedetto del Tronto (Italy). Local authorities, tourism operators, universities, and businesses gathered to explore how smart tools and new methodologies can transform destination governance across the Mediterranean.

🌿 MAST: Sustainability & Accessibility First
The MAST team presented its new assessment framework for evaluating how accommodation facilities meet ISO 21401 sustainability and accessibility standards. The session highlighted how GSTC-aligned criteria and digital tools support real-time monitoring, evidence-based decisions, and more inclusive, sustainable tourism experiences.

💡 Libeccio: Intelligent Systems for Modern DMOs
The Libeccio consortium showcased its DMSS platform, an advanced digital system that helps destinations manage sustainability performance, visitor flows, and strategic planning through integrated, reliable data.

Together, MAST and Libeccio offer a comprehensive ecosystem for today’s tourism sector:
MAST provides measurable sustainability and accessibility standards, while Libeccio delivers the smart governance tools needed to implement them at destination level.

🌍 How can tourism truly give back to people and the planet?

On 26 September 2025, the University of Primorska (Faculty of Tourism Studies) hosted an inspiring MAST event in Portorož:
“Towards Inclusive Regenerative Tourism: How Tourism Gives Back to People and the Planet?”

Project partners, industry stakeholders, and local actors came together to reflect on how tourism can move beyond sustainability — not only reducing its footprint, but actively regenerating communities, cultural heritage, and ecosystems.

💡 Key takeaways included:
✔ Tourism revenues reinvested in cultural landscapes, green spaces, and inclusive urban planning
✔ Tourism as a driver for reconciliation, social cohesion, and peace in post-conflict societies
✔ Stronger local supply chains linking tourism with farmers, artisans, and circular economy models
✔ Destination partnerships that make regeneration real — from accessible beaches to sustainable mobility

This milestone event showed how regenerative tourism can restore, enrich, and empower — perfectly aligned with the MAST mission of building inclusive, innovative, and resilient tourism models across the Mediterranean.

✨ MAST at the 18th Annual EMRBI Conference in Porto ✨

From 10–12 September 2025, the MAST project was presented at the 18th Annual EMRBI Conference: Exploring New Horizons in Business and Management in Porto 🇵🇹.

📄 Our contribution came in the form of the paper:
"Sustainability in the Italian Hospitality Industry: Challenges and Opportunities"

🔍 The study, developed within WP1 of the MAST project, sheds light on sustainability practices in the Italian hospitality sector:

High-end hotels are investing in innovative technologies 🌐

Smaller hotels emphasize community and local connections 🏘️

Common barriers remain: high costs and bureaucracy ⚖️

These findings provide an essential knowledge base for the next MAST Work Packages, where practical tools and protocols for sustainable hospitality will be developed.

🌱 Together, we’re building pathways toward a greener, more resilient tourism industry.
