Day Heights Garden Club visited Clover Valley Farm for our August activity. Clover Valley is a regenerative family-owned farm in Bethel, Ohio, known for its U-cut flower fields, seasonal pumpkin patch, and future U-cut Christmas trees. Owner, Jill Parriman, and her daughter Daisy, greeted us and shared their family's story. Members then headed to a nearby restaurant for lunch. Beautiful day down on the farm!

For all the monarch lovers: check out the caterpillars on common milkw**d, two kinds of swamp milkw**d, and tropical milkw**d! There are warnings about growing tropical milkw**d, but when they talk about it spreading disease, that happens when the plant winters over, which could never happen in our zone (pulling out dead plants also help). The butterflies love it for the colorful blooms! Joyce Bucci

The Day Heights Garden Club participated in all aspects of the Region 4 OAGC flower show, in one form or another. President, Joyce Bucci, entered a Carolyn Whorton caladium in the horticulture show, the club donated a birdhouse and a plant to the region for their raffle. We exhibited the beautiful sign member, Linda Morley Muth, had made that describes our club. Vice President, Joyce A. Pigan Baker; Secretary, Anne Haskin; and Treasurer, Patricia Thacker Johnson, set up a vendor table that brought in additional revenue for future club expenses. Joyce Bucci sat down with Naomi Ormes who explained many of the artistic designs exhibited at the show, in the event that we want to explore the topic in the future. Member, Michelle Hall, donated plants and provided much assistance at the sale on Friday, while Patti Uecker assisted and help tear down on Saturday.

Yesterday club member Carol Tom Langdon and Joyce Bucci paid a visit to the flowerbeds the club has been maintaining for many years now at The Leming House in Miami Township's Community Park, to spruce them up prior to last night's concert. They were already looking phenomenal, with this year's amazing growth, but Joyce and Carol did clean things up a little. The black-eyed susans and naked ladies were the stars of the show. The butterfly w**d we planted a couple years ago is doing very well, but no evidence of caterpillars yet. Maybe we need to put in a couple more plants to make sure we get the Monarch's attention. Well done, Day Heights Garden Club!

Did you know when Monarch Butterfly caterpillars get ready to pupate, they typically form a "J"?

Monarch Butterflies are under threat of extinction. There are several reasons... probably the most significant concern is milkw**d plants. Monarchs lay their eggs only on milkw**ds, and that’s what their caterpillars eat. The number of milkw**ds, however, is steadily decreasing because of the use of herbicides.

Farmers used to kill w**ds on their croplands by tilling between rows to chop them up, then turning them into the soil. Invariably, some milkw**ds survived the process, and croplands used to be significant habitats for the plants.

Save the Monarchs...plant milkw**d in your garden!

Day Heights Garden Club visited Clermont County House of Honey in Newtonsville yesterday. Christina received us warmly and generously with seats, coffee, hand-outs and more info about honey bees than has ever been conveyed in an hour's time. She was a veritable fount of information, delivered with passion and great enthusiasm, and welcomed questions. Who knew that bees can be artificially inseminated?! Her family is well known and performs a great service to beekeepers, would-be beekeepers and anyone who wants their health to benefit from honey. We all benefit from these essential pollinators!

Christina has many, many kinds of honey available for sale in her lovely, historical shop (originally a church built in 1811) plus propolis, royal jelly, wonderful teas and many other items. Please visit her shop.

We went on to enjoy lunch and our business meeting at Weiss Baking Company. Our next meeting will be August 25 at Clover Valley Farm. Join us!
