Sukkot is זְמַן שִׂמְחָתֵנוּ, our season of joy. But this year our hearts are heavy with the events of Yom Kippur. Communities worldwide keep investing in security against a rising tide of antisemitism, and that fear was realized in the shooting at Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, a community that celebrates an inclusive, welcoming Judaism. Arzenu Olami stands with Sons of Jacob and prays for Constable Jeff Smith’s full recovery.

In Israel, on Yom Kippur morning, Reform congregation Kol HaNeshama was attacked by Jewish extremists, filled with hate. For the fourth time in a month, our community was subjected to escalating egg throwing, theft, vandalism, torn down Pride flags, broken windows and more. Arzenu Olami stands with Kol HaNeshama, the Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism (IMPJ) and all of the liberal congregations that have been subjected to hate crimes and violence by fellow Jews.

We call upon our partners in the National Institutions of Israel, the government and police to speak out against this hate in every form, to protect our communities and congregations, and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

These attacks are now so numerous it takes effort to compile the list. As we build and celebrate in our sukkot, we pray for סֻכַּת שְׁלוֹמֶךָ to spread over us.

Not a bunker that walls us off from each other, but a sukkah. Open, its roof letting in light to dispel the dark, and bringing us together in strength because of our unity, a proud Jewish and Zionist people.

During the Yom Kippur War in 1973, at a fraught and fragile time for our people and for Israel, Naomi Shemer lifted our hearts with Lu Yehi—“May It Be”—a uniquely Jewish and Israeli answer to the Beatles’ “Let It Be.”

As we welcome 5787, we again find ourselves at a fraught and fragile time. With the shofar, the drum and the words of our prayers, there is much to celebrate from the year behind us, even as there is still much to repair.

Even as we hold those we lost close in our hearts, we celebrate: our hostages have come home, and we share in moments of joy and life on their paths toward healing.

Even amid a surge of antisemitism across the globe and attacks on Israel and Jews everywhere, we proudly showed our love for Israel when we came together at the World Zionist Congress. We crossed the globe to gather in a Jerusalem at war—to celebrate the dream of Israel and Zionism in all its many facets and forms, and to declare ourselves ready to do the work of building a stronger, better tomorrow.

לו יהי — May it be...

A year of courage to imagine and build an Israel that is progressive, pluralistic and unafraid to change and grow.

A year of determination to build a world of inclusion, justice and equity.

A year in which we work together to strengthen the bonds between Israel and global Jewry.

A year of safety and flourishing in Israel and for Jewish communities around the world.

A year in which every voice is welcomed and heard at every table of decision.

A year of tikkun olam—not as a single act, but as a practice repeated together until the Israel we dream of, and the world we know is possible, draw nearer.

Quando la guerra entra nelle nostre vite, che cosa può ancora raccontare la letteratura?

È partita da questa domanda la serata di ieri alla Fondazione Besso di Roma, dove lo scrittore israeliano Assaf Gavron ha incontrato Giancarlo De Cataldo per parlare di guerra, amore, memoria e del difficile mestiere di raccontare il presente.

L’incontro, “Scrittori tra amore e guerra: voci inquiete in tempo di crisi”, organizzato da Beth Hillel e Laboratorio Rabin in collaborazione con la Fondazione Ernesta Besso, la casa editrice Giuntina e l’Ambasciata d’ Israele, è stato moderato dalla giornalista culturale e critica Ginevra Amadio.

Due scrittori, due sguardi, e una conversazione intensa sul ruolo della letteratura quando la realtà sembra sfuggire alle parole. Perché proprio nei momenti più difficili, forse, raccontare diventa ancora più necessario.

Al centro della serata Seguendo le tracce, il nuovo romanzo di Assaf Gavron: una storia di quattro ragazzi, di un’amicizia che attraversa il tempo e di una memoria che continua a interrogare il presente.

Una serata di quelle che lasciano domande aperte. E forse è proprio questo che chiediamo alla letteratura: non darci risposte facili, ma aiutarci a guardare più a fondo.

It is with profound sorrow that we share the news of Rabbi Leigh Lerner's passing.

Rabbi Lerner served our congregation for 23 years (1989-2012) as Senior Rabbi, and later as Rabbi Emeritus. He was deeply learned and equally compassionate, and a beloved leader of this community.

The funeral will be in Minnesota in the coming days, and there will be a shiva at Temple. Details to follow.

May Rabbi Lerner’s memory always be a blessing.

For the second time in less than ten days, a Reform synagogue in Israel has been vandalized. We condemn these attacks unequivocally.

Congregation Darchei Noam in Ramat Hasharon and Jerusalem’s Kehilat Kol HaNeshama are vibrant Reform congregations. The impact of these attacks is felt by all those who value the fundamental right of Jews to practice Judaism in the way that speaks to them. We call on the authorities to investigate them fully and hold those responsible accountable.

To our Reform colleagues, families, children, and all those who feel a connection to our Movement and to these congregations, and all those who feel threatened by these senseless acts of hatred: you are not alone. We, your extended family in North America, stand with you.

Per la Giornata Europea della Cultura Ebraica, un evento organizzato con Laboratorio Rabin grazie alla preziosa collaborazione della Fondazione Besso e Giuntina.
Ci vedremo l’8 settembre alle 18:00 presso la Fondazione Besso per un incontro di altissimo livello. Due grandi scrittori, l'italiano Giancarlo De Cataldo e l'israeliano Assaf Gavron, dialogheranno su temi universali: la necessità della scrittura, la complessità del raccontare e scrivere durante la guerra e l'amore. A guidare e moderare il confronto ci sarà la bravissima giornalista culturale e critica Ginevra Amadio.

Giancarlo De Cataldo: Celebre scrittore, ex magistrato e sceneggiatore, maestro del noir italiano e autore di successi globali come Romanzo criminale e Suburra.
Assaf Gavron: Tra i più apprezzati e premiati scrittori israeliani contemporanei, traduttore in ebraico di Philip Roth e frontman della band rock The Mouth and Foot.
