Today we celebrate Saint Gregory the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church, whose monastic humility, reforming vision, and missionary zeal shaped the liturgy and guided the Church through turbulent times.
Quick facts every Catholic should know about Saint Gregory, Pope:
1️⃣Born in Rome around 540 AD to a noble family, he served as Prefect of the city before becoming a monk; he reigned as Pope from 590 until his death in 604.
2️⃣He defined the medieval papacy and the Roman Liturgy, promoting Gregorian chant and writing the "Pastoral Rule," which served as the essential manual for bishops for centuries.
3️⃣Moved by the sight of English slaves whom he called "angels," he launched the mission of St. Augustine of Canterbury to evangelize England, a project he had long cherished.
His life illustrates how authentic leadership in the Church is found in humble service, earning him the title "Servant of the Servants of God." By blending deep contemplation with untiring pastoral charity, Saint Gregory preserved the faith and brought new nations to the knowledge of Christ.
