Castello 925

Castello 925 Venice based non-for-profit organization with the aim of promoting art and “cre-activity”

(ENGLISH BELOW)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Castello 925 was born in the mind of its creator, Luca Caldironi, long before it ever became an actual space. Luca had been envisioning for a while a space dedicated to creativity, or rather, cre-activity, a 360-degree creative activity that would bring together art, culture, literature, leaving plenty of space for imagination! We’re not talking about a simple art-gallery, which would not only be reductive but also, I must say, outdated. This is a place where creative expressions of all kinds come to meet, clash and leave their footprint! A place to present “finished” works that were built elsewhere … but also a space where new ideas come to life and new co-operations! A place to live in and hang out, not just for grand openings, but for the everyday life of an artist, a writer’s research or exchanges of passionate art-seekers and collectors. Since 2011, “Castello925” has seen many an artist, author and collector go by, who kept the place alive with all sorts of projects. In 2015, following the success of those first years, a second location for “Castello925” was born, situated at number “780” of the same fondamenta San Giuseppe. Only 50 meters away from the first place it presents a new, much wider range of opportunities. The concept expands and the space, with the possibility to set up more complex exhibitions, makes new variables available. Variables that, thanks to the added location, will allow us to have two independent exhibitions at the same time, one close to the other but completely autonomous from one another, as synergic cultural activities that implement each other.

How an artwork takes shape: artist Gabriella Kirby on her creative process, from the first mark to the moment a new work begins to emerge.

What happens when we return to a place that was already part of our story, before we were born?
For Gabriella Kirby, returning to the Veneto is something deeply personal. Her grandparents left their village after the Second World War. Two generations later, Gabriella comes back with her own family, carrying a story that has travelled across time and across the Atlantic. At Castello 925, that return takes the form of an exhibition.
In Future Light, fragile forms of plant, animal and human life speak of memory, vulnerability, adaptation and what can be carried from one generation to another. The past is there, but so is something else: the possibility to transform.
Gabriella brings her history to Venice. And, in return, Venice becomes part of the story.
Towards the end of their conversation, Luca asks:
“Where is the light for you?”
“Sometimes, you need to create the light,” Gabriella answers.
Perhaps this is also what art can do:
hold what has been, without closing the possibility of what comes next.

Future Light can be visited until September 20th.
We’ll be here until then and we’d be happy to continue the conversation with you in the gallery.
