For three weeks, Mercedes Alonso Martínez, researcher at ANFACO-CECOPESCA, joined our Ecoefishent Università di Genova (DISTAV) team to evaluate the efficacy of Nofima hydrolysed permeate protein fraction for its use in the final cosmetic formulation. Together with Elena Grasselli’s team, she investigated its ability to protect skin cells from UV-induced damage. Another great example of collaborative research supporting the valorisation of fish side-streams and the development of safe, sustainable cosmetic ingredients within the circular and blue economy.

🎓 Congratulations to Federica Robino from our partner Angel Consulting!
Today she defends her PhD thesis at the Università di Genova: "Facilitate the cosmetic safety assessment through the creation of a database integrating bibliographical and experimental data, the example of EcoeFISHent project." with the professor Elena Grasselli.

A work that brings together research, cosmetic safety and sustainability, made possible also thanks to the European project EcoeFISHent. 🌊🔬

🌊 Today we're in Acqui Terme talking to students about turning waste into value.

"Plastica e non solo" brings to the Istituto Rita Levi Montalcini with talks on fishing net recycling, sustainable cosmetics from fish industry residues, green materials for wind energy, and the future of plastics recycling.
Huge thanks to Sara Pierfranca Caligaris for hosting us at her school.

With speakers from Proplast, FILSE SpA - Finanziaria Ligure per lo Sviluppo Economico, and Università degli Studi di Genovaova sharing real science with the next generation.
Because circularity starts in the classroom.

♻️ Sorting ghost nets by plastic type, straight from the sea to science.
our partners Proplast visited A@Area Marina Protetta Portofino to analyze fishing nets and gear collected from the sea and seized by authorities. Using portable NIR equipment, each net was identified and sorted by material. A key step toward recycling.

Next up: further analysis at Proplast's labs.

🌊 Last Saturday, "I Fantasmi del Mare (Sea Ghosts)" officially opened in Acqui Terme.
The exhibition reveals the hidden threat of ghost fishing gear, nets and equipment abandoned at sea that keep trapping marine life for decades. Matteo Acquarone, co-creator of the exhibition, personally guided visitors through this powerful multimedia experience.
