The marvelous powers of a good essay ✍️

Join us at 10am in June 6 at St. James Church for a workshop presented by Wallis Wilde-Menozzi.

Through contemporary essay examples and guided exercises, participants will explore scene, dialogue, point of view, authentic language, and the power of voice. Together, we’ll ask: what makes a personal essay memorable, alive, and true?
This workshop is designed to help writers rediscover the freedom, confidence, and seriousness needed to deepen their work.

Wallis Wilde-Menozzi is the author of three memoir/nonfiction books published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, along with a novel, poetry, and a forthcoming bilingual selection of Antonella Anedda’s poetry (2026). Her essays have appeared in publications including Kenyon Review, AGNI, Southwest Review, Tel Aviv Review, and Literary Hub.

RSVP required — link in bio.

Please note:
• Attendance is reserved for members of the Florence Literary Society
• You may join via our website or register at the door for €40

Last Saturday, we hosted a wonderful workshop for our members, led by the brilliant writer, Kristina Darling.
We spent the morning upstairs at St. Mark's exploring the many ways dialogue can shape tension, intimacy, mystery, and movement across genres, guided by Kristina and the thoughtful passages she selected from writers like Jhumpa Lahiri, Lori Schappell, Padraig O Tuama, Carol Guess, EJ Colen, and Hilary Plum.
Through prompts, conversation, and shared writing, we experimented with punctuation, demands, exposition, interruption, and all the ways people reveal themselves through language.
Once again, we were blown away by the writing in the room. There were lines that made us laugh out loud, moments that hit us right in the gut, and so many reminders of why gathering to write together matters so much.
Thank you to everyone who joined us. Our next workshop is June 6, 2026 on the Powers of a Good Essay. Be sure to sign up!

Join our friends at the for their upcoming Meet the Author event!

Meet the Author: Nicholas Hopton
13 April - 18:30 - Maremma Mia

Career diplomat, committed italophile and brilliant writer Nicholas Hopton will discuss his new book with Simon Gammell.

Maremma Mia is a warm, witty chronicle of one family’s adventure transforming an old farmhouse and olive grove in a remote corner of the Maremma into a home. From the nearby medieval town of Suvereto to the wild hills, fertile valley and coastline steeped in Etruscan mystery, the book weaves together the region’s landscape, food, wines, flora, fauna and traditions with vivid portraits of its people. Along the way, it explores the Maremma’s extraordinary history — from imperial assassinations and Napoleonic upheaval to partisan defiance in World War II.

Upcoming events in Florence for readers and writers!

Don't forget to sign up for the upcoming FLS writers workshop if you haven't already!

Saturday, March 28th
Writing workshop: Time sensitive: expanding, slowing, and layering time

Poet and award-winning author Kevin Craft is fascinated by the compression that lyric modes afford, scrunching hundreds or thousands of years into the space of a single sentence or blowing up the minutiae of a moment into many stanzas or paragraphs. He will conduct this workshop around ideas of anachronism and synchronicity in writing and lead participants as they play with various measures of time in lyric and narrative structures. Drawing on examples from prose, poetry, and painting (not to mention geology!), he will teach techniques, through generative exercises, to work the 4th dimension in all its forms into your writing.

Note: This workshop is for FLS members only. Become a 2026 member here or pay the membership fee in cash at the event.

When: 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Where: Undercroft at St. James church, Via Bernardo Rucellai 9, Firenze
