BAU Alto Adige-Südtirol

BAU Alto Adige-Südtirol BAU is an institute for contemporary arts and ecology based in Südtirol / Alto Adige BAU is an initiative for artistic production located in South Tyrol, Italy.

BAU initiates artistic residencies that establish forms of collaboration between local communities, the material culture of the territory, and its traditional activities. BAU invites artists, curators, and researchers to meet and collaborate with local producers, through the development of artistic projects that promote their common identities and interests. Through different formats such as field

trips, screenings, walks, meals, workshops, and talks, BAU dialogues with diverse and transversal audiences. The collaborative vocation of BAU is grounded on the encounter as a privileged form of exchange, in which coexistence and cooperation are central factors for the definition of a common space in which rural and contemporary artistic cultures meet. In German, BAU stands for a construction site, a lodge, a building, thus the name alludes to the importance of the act of building, in which doing and knowing shape one another. BAU pays tribute to the Bauhaus and its transdisciplinary educational approach, which is based on the exchange between visual and applied arts. Being a space in constant construction, BAU does not define itself through a physical location.

In mid-May, the landscape of Kohlern/Colle, above Bolzano, was traversed by a giant fish over 20 metres long, carried through the forest by children and parents from the Montessori School. This collective performative gesture was guided by artist Barbara Gamper at the invitation of BAU.

On 14 and 15 May, Barbara Gamper led Becoming Fish, Becoming Ocean, a two-days movement workshop with students aged 10–12 at the Montessori School in Kohlern/Colle. Through breathing exercises, collective movement, and playful choreography, participants explored the rhythms of more-than-human life forms, asking questions such as: 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘰 𝘧𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦? 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘰 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳? 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘯𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴? Together, the students brought to life the long fish created by Eva Koťátková during BAU’s residency programme last year. The workshop culminated in a joyful parade and community picnic, inviting families and the school community to join the celebration.

In 2021–2022, we had the pleasure of inviting Katrin Hornek as artist-in-residence in collaboration with Ar/Ge Kunst, Bolzano. Hornek’s research began with the former Montecatini factory in Sinigo (Merano), established in 1924 under Fascism for the production of ammonia, a key component in artificial fertilizers and explosives. Adopting a speculative approach, Hornek traced the technological developments that led to the invention of synthetically fixed nitrogen, intertwining this history with the stories and experiences of the factory workers. By assuming both molecular and terrestrial perspectives, her work renders tangible the otherwise invisible reciprocity and continuity among human, environmental, animal, and technological bodies.

Hornek’s Plant Plant comprised both a solo exhibition at Ar/Ge Kunst and a choreographed intervention at the former Montecatini factory, titled Factory Walk, developed with performer Sabina Holzer. The performance invited audiences to engage physically with the site’s architecture and industrial infrastructure, foregrounding the continuities between organic and inorganic matter. In doing so, it proposed an understanding of the natural, cultural, and industrial as intertwined and interdependent bodies of which we are all part.

BAU Residency 2021-2022 was supported by: WWTF – Wiener Wissenschafts-, Forschungs- und Technologiefonds, BMKÖS – Bundesministerium für Kunst, Kultur, öffentlichen Dienst und Sport, Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano Alto Adige, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio, Sudtirolo, Comune di Bolzano, Ripartizione Cultura, Dr Schär; and in collaboration with Phileas – A Fund for Contemporary Art.

• BAU Community • Barbara Gamper • Becoming Fish, becoming Ocean • May 2026

With the first riverside walks of the season, we’re delighted to introduce artist and close friend of BAU, Barbara Gamper.

In mid-May, Barbara will be facilitating a two day workshop with the children and teachers of the Montessori School in Colle/Kohlern (Bolzano/Bozen) as part of Pastoral Twilight project. During the workshop will reactivate the textile fish—over 20 meters long—created by Eva Koťátková in last year BAU residency.

Barbara Gamper (*1981, UK/I) is an Italian interdisciplinary artist from South Tyrol based in Berlin, working across movement, somatics, performance, moving image, audio story telling and textiles. Her research centers on the the politics of embodiment seeking to advocate for decolonial and q***r feminist thinking and practices through somatic movement workshop formats in art, education and activism.

Barbara has been part of the BAU Community for quite some time. Within the Welcome Bees! Project in 2016, she led the performance workshop “Rock Star Bees” for children. In 2022, as part of the Caldera project, she also facilitated a somatic movement workshop exploring the relationships between the human body and plant life.

The workshop and BAU Residency 2025 - 2026 are part of the project 𝙋𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙏𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩: 𝘐𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘳𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴 held in collaboration with the organisations ARE: Woods (Czech Republic) and Verpėjos (Lithuania). Pastoral Twilight is co-funded by the European Union.
We are looking forward this new collaboration with !

Today, Sven Sachsalber, our dear friend and a remarkable artist, would have turned 39.

We miss you, your wit and your humor!

If you would like to gain insight into the research project about Sven Sachsalber that BAU conducted in collaboration with Museion from 2022 to 2025, you still have the opportunity to visit the exhibition 𝗦𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗮𝗰𝗵𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗿. 𝗠𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲: 𝗔 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗶𝗼𝗻 on view until 21 June 2026 at Museion.

After years of research, uncountable hours of conversations, and collective remembering, we opened to the public last December at Museion an exhibition presenting the multi-year project dedicated to Sven Sachsalber, who passed away in 2020.

Initiated by Museion in 2021 with the support of the Department of German Culture of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, the project was carried out in collaboration with us, BAU – Institute for Contemporary Art and Ecology, in constant dialogue with Sachsalber’s family.

The exhibition, curated by BAU and designed by Studio Claudia Polizzi, presents the results of the research project on the artist’s work. On view for the first time is the drawing series Max und Moritz (2019). The exhibition is accompanied by a publication that gathers the research results. 𝗠𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲: 𝗔 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 exemplifies how attentive engagement with an artist’s body of work may contribute to preserving and renewing the cultural heritage of a region.

During the one-year BAU residency of 2024, the artist Grace Gloria Denis  (*1990 USA, lives and works between Spain and Switzerland) has explored bread as a vector for liaising with the non-human while collaborating with bakers and scientists in South Tyrol whose practices deal with the ancient wheat variety “Binkel” (club wheat).

On October 21, 2024, the artist together with the baker Ivo de Pellegrin ( , Meran) prepared a special dinner in the space of Caldera, welcoming the participants to bake, taste and listen together following the traces of Binkel or triticum compactum, a type of grain that was once widespread in Alto Adige / Südtirol.

We invite you to explore the audio work— sound recordings of Binkel processing created by Grace Gloria Denis during her residency — on our website. Link in bio.

We are happy to share that BAU is joining the Climate Action network formed in South Tyrol, together with other volunteers and organizations working toward tangible change.

Those familiar with BAU understand how deeply ecological responsibility and climate awakened are embedded in its curatorial and institutional practice, reflecting a close connection with the region in which we live and work: South Tyrol.

For the past ten years, BAU has been developing contemporary art projects that address the critical challenges of our time, overcoming the divide between nature and culture. We embrace an ecological perspective that understand human with its environment as part of an interconnected web.

We believe that change can only take place collectively. We invite you to follow Climate Action work and practice and stay updated on upcoming initiatives. .southtyrol

BAU Residency • ERBA • 2026

EN/
We have just concluded a week of explorations in the South Tyrolean landscape together with ERBA (Philipp Kolmann & Suzanne Bernhardt). We walked through snow, smelled flowering bushes, and visited farmers, scientists, fruit orchards, pastures, and forests alongside the artists selected for the Pastoral Twilight residency.

During a talk at the Faculty for Design and Arts at the University of Bolzano ERBA gave an insight into their practice.

This summer, ERBA will return to spend time in the hamlet of Rio Lagundo/Aschbach, exploring the ecotone where forest meets meadow—a threshold for reimagining dwelling through making, eating, and moving together.

We are excited to see what their research will lead to... 👀 Stay tuned!

In the meantime, explore their work ➜ link in bio.

Last summer, BAU was invited to curate Arte nella Certosa / Kunst in der Kartause a biannual art project initiated by Kulturverein Schnals.
The exhibition 𝘜𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘸𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘳 (20 July to 31 August 2025) explored practices of schooling, listening, and play of our underwater relatives. How can other livingbeings become our teachers and bearers of hope?

As part of the project BAU invited Eva Koťátková for a residency to Certosa / Karthaus where she explored the interconnectedness of the human and more-than-human worlds. The residency was part of 𝙋𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙏𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩: Initiatives for rural cultures a two-year project co-funded by the European Union.

Alongside Eva Koťátková’s work, the curators Lisa Mazza and Simone Mair (BAU) selected five artists to engage with the surroundings and history of the Allerengelberg monastery in Karthaus / Certosa.

With Eva Koťátková, Martina Steckholzer, Linda Jasmin Mayer, Ingrid Hora, Caroline Profanter.
