🐢Happy 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗 𝗦𝗘𝗔 𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗧𝗟𝗘 𝗗𝗔𝗬!

👉Mediterranean Sea is home to several species of turtle:
Loggerhead turtle 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘢 - with genetically unique Mediterranean population
Green turtle 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘮𝘺𝘥𝘢𝘴 and
Leatherback turtle 𝘋𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘺𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘢, known to be the largest turtle in the world
The rarer Kemp’s ridley and the hawksbill turtles are occasionally spotted in the Mediterranean basin.

⚠️Loggerhead, green & leatherback turtles are found throughout the Mediterranean and because the Mediterranean is a heavily trafficked polluted semi-enclosed sea, these endangered and vulnerable species face severe threats to their health and existence across the region:
1. Fisheries Bycatch
2. Nesting Habitat Degradation & Tourism
3. Marine Debris and Plastic Pollution
4. Vessel Strikes and Noise Pollution
5. Climate Change

⚠️Obviously, the current laws that are meant to protect them are not really working.

That’s why we need a new paradigm shift - new laws that treat the Mediterranean as a living community with inherent right to life and health.

⚖️🌊🐢 That new law would recognise the bioregion as a living community and would grant the Mediterranean its inherent Rights to life and health as subject in law.

🌊 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗢𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘆 🌊

🪼 Today is a day to celebrate the ocean in all its richness, beauty and complexity.

From vast open waters to deep-sea ecosystems, from coral habitats to seagrass meadows, the ocean is a living world: dynamic, interconnected, and constantly shaping life on Earth.

Yet oceans across the globe are under unbearable pressure. Pollution, warming waters, habitat destruction, and biodiversity loss are altering ecosystems that have evolved over millions of years.

The Mediterranean is no exception.

🦭 As one of the world's most biodiverse seas, it is home to thousands of species, complex ecological relationships, and unique habitats found nowhere else on Earth. It is not simply a space between continents, but a living ecosystem in its own right.

On this World Ocean Day, we invite a different perspective: one that recognizes the ocean not as property, a resource, but as a living entity worthy of respect and protection.

💙 Because the sea has value beyond what it provides.

Its existence, its diversity, and its ability to flourish matter in and of themselves.

💙 For the oceans.
🌊 For the Mediterranean.
🌍 For the living world.

𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗻:
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗦𝗘𝗔 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗘𝗧

❗This isn’t a faraway crisis. It is not a chart on a screen or a projection for 2100. It is happening here, now❗

♨️ The Mediterranean Sea is warming 20% faster than the global average. It is not just a statistic, it’s a disaster playing out before our eyes.

As a direct result of greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of fossil fuels, Mediterranean waters are taking in excess heat from the atmosphere.

🔴 The Mediterranean Sea broke records 2 years ago, on 15th August 2024 the daily median surface temperature was 28.9°C.

⚠️ Marine heatwaves, once rare, are now frequent and regular. Native marine species are suffering from extreme heat and disappearing. Invasive species are taking over. Fish populations are collapsing. Coral is bleaching.

The ripple effects don’t stop at the shoreline. As the sea warms and expands, coastal erosion accelerates. Flooding becomes more frequent. Beaches disappear.

And in all this, the silence is deafening.

🦈 The Mediterranean is more than a backdrop for holidays. It’s a living, breathing body, a community of multiple species.

It is, quite literally, at the center of life for more than 17 thousand marine species, and it is in crisis.

⚖️ We believe the time has come to recognize and defend the rights of the Mediterranean bioregion in local, national and international laws.

👉 That’s why we are working toward a formal adoption of the Declaration of Rights of the Mediterranean Bioregion.
The sea is already speaking. It's time we finally heard it.

🐙🦞🐠🐬🐋🫍🦈🦭🦆The Mediterranean Basin is a global biodiversity hotspot, hosting over 25,000 plant species (60% endemic) and 17,000 marine species, with 20–30% endemism.

🗺️ It covers less than 1% of the world’s ocean surface yet contains 10% of known marine species.

❗However, it is highly threatened by climate change, overfishing, pollution and urbanization, with 19% of assessed species threatened with extinction according to UNEP.

👉This is why our Rights of the Mediterranean initiative matters. Imagine if the Mediterranean could speak for itself in court. If it had defenders fighting for its health & future!

🤔 What if people could relate to the Mediterranean not just as a sea, but as a living being with deserving rights ?
What if the Mediterranean could speak FOR ITSELF in courts?
What if it could be represented by scientists, policy-makers, community representatives working together to defend its interests?

🌍 Around the world, a growing movement is recognising ecosystems as living entities with legal rights. This approach acknowledges that Nature has inherent rights and intrinsic value, beyond the nourishment it provides, and deserves to be protected in its own name for its own right.

🗣️ Recognising the Mediterranean Bioregion as a legal entity would mean giving it a voice in decision making processes that affect its future. It would allow representatives to defend its rights, health and sovereignty.

Because the health of the Mediterranean is also inseparable from the health of ALL the beings who live in and around it.

⚖️ That is why we created a Declaration of the Rights of the Mediterranean Bioregion, designed to protect the Mediterranean through law.

Our work on the Declaration reminds us that recognising the rights of the Ocean is not only legal work but a transformation of our relationship with the sea and Nature as a whole.

We invite partners, practitioners, and communities from across the Mediterranean to contribute to recognising and granting the Mediterranean Bioregion the voice it deserves.

🌍 The Mediterranean and Antarctica, two aquatic bioregions may be ‘far’ from each other, but they are connected through global ocean and Earth climate forming one interconnected living being.

❕Both of these beings are in grave, life threatening danger❕

✊⚖️ But people are rising up and working on initiatives which would recognise those beings as subjects of rights in law - as they deserve.
This would help secure their healthy life for generations to come.

🫒 The Mediterranean has always been a sea of resilience. It not only survived the great flood that filled its basin but went on to thrive. It witnessed the rise and fall of empires, the passage of countless generations.
But today, its greatest fight for survival is unfolding before our eyes.

📉🐟 🦈Fish populations have massively plummeted in just a few decades, and scientists warn that more than 90% of fishes are now overexploited. Once-abundant catches are shrinking, leaving both individual ecosystems and the sea as a living entity struggling.

🌡️The Mediterranean sea is warming faster than any other sea on Earth. In recent summers, temperatures have soared above 30 °C in places, causing mass die-offs of corals, mussels, and gorgonians. Ancient underwater forests of seagrass -lungs of the Mediterranean- are retreating under the pressure of extreme heat, widespread pollution, overfishing and rampant unchecked coastal development.

Plastic drifts through the waves, filling the stomachs of turtles and seabirds. Silent beaches, empty nets, broken traditions: this is what collapse looks like.

But the Mediterranean is not gone yet. Its story is still being written.

⚖️🌊 By recognizing the Rights of the Mediterranean, the bioregion can represent itself in courts and influence policies, protecting life, culture, and futures that depend on its health.

𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆

🦭 World Aquatic Animal Day is celebrated annually on April 3 to raise awareness about the protection of animals living in or near water and to highlight issues like overfishing and pollution, urging better legal protection.

🐬The Mediterranean Sea is home to an estimated 10-12,000 aquatic animal species, despite covering less than 1% of the global ocean surface. This high biodiversity represents about 18% of the world's known marine species, with roughly 20-30% of them living exclusively in the Mediterranean.

‼️Alarmingly, aquatic animals in the Mediterranean are severely endangered, with almost 20% to 25% of species threatened with extinction!!

🦈 Over 40% of shark and ray species face extinction, making it the world's most dangerous sea for them, while over 75% of fishes are overexploited and 41% of marine mammals lost in just the past 50 years!!
The most endangered marine mammal in the world, the Monk seal, lives in the Mediterranean sea.

⚖️The current policies and laws obviously are not working and protecting the Mediterranean living community as they should.
It’s high time we changed our relationship with the rest of the living world and have laws that reflect that!

👉Recognising and granting legal rights to the Mediterranean Bioregion in law, as a subject of rights, not an object to be managed, we can protect health, integrity and survival for all its inhabitants, aquatic animals included.

Today we celebrate
🦭 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗹

🦭 The Mediterranean monk seal is the only seal living in the Mediterranean and is one of the world’s most endangered marine mammals, with only 450–700 individuals remaining!!

‼️Tragically, the monk seal faces a plethora of threats and dangers in the Mediterranean sea:
⚠️Habitat Loss & Degradation: Development and tourism have destroyed coastal habitats, forcing seals to use inaccessible sea caves, which are often unsafe for pups.
⚠️Human-Caused Deaths: Deliberate killings by fishermen, who perceive the seals as competitors for fish and threats to their gear.
⚠️Entanglement: Drowning in fishing nets (bycatch).
⚠️Environmental Threats: Disease outbreaks, toxic algae blooms, and pollution (plastics).

It is obvious that the current laws and regulations are not adequately protecting this suffering being.

⚖️🌊 But, by recognising and granting legal rights to the Mediterranean Bioregion in law, as a subject of rights, not an object to be managed, we can protect health, integrity and survival for all its inhabitants, seals included.
