Christian-François Bouche-Villeneuve, born in Neuilly 29th July 1921, was a traveler, writer, publisher, photographer, video-maker; And, yes, filmmaker. All of these show the unending curiosity of his, for modern techniques, one of the many facets of the man who chose to call himself, more often than not, Chris Marker.
All his life, Marker was so in tune with the present that he had explored all its dimensions, its space, its continuity, its ideas and its techniques. Before the others and better than them, he had understood the dangers of mediatization and had chosen not to appear in public. After the death of a particularly beloved cat, “Guillaume-en-Egypte” (the famous orange cat), he adopted its appearance to make commentaries, apologues and jokes.
from Jean-Michel Frodon’s text
This is the beginning of an entry into Marker’s world; Marker who saw the world as an unfinished archive: faces, animals, revolutions, memories and images that might only be understood long after the first appeared.
