Safety and Care Go Hand in Hand in Domiz Camp

In October, life in 1 and Domiz 2 refugee camps. Duhok was filled with action, learning, and hope.

Through Project Vanguard, implemented by Mile Organization for Environmental Protection - MILE with support from DanChurchAid and in close coordination with the Iraqi Kurdistan Mine Action Agency (IKMAA), communities came together to learn how safety saves lives and caring for the environment sustains them.

Lively and youth-led clean-up drives, the message was clear - protecting people and the planet begins at home.

October Highlights:

2,386 residents reached through 103 awareness sessions

200 trees planted

24 youth ambassadors leading change

Dozens of clean-up drives and school events

Turning Awareness into Action

Meet Shreen, a mother in Domiz 1 Camp, who turned knowledge into action. After attending an EORE session, she began teaching her neighbors how to stay safe and protect their surroundings. Her story reflects a growing movement where awareness turns into leadership.

“Safety begins at home.” Shreen, Hero of Safety, Domiz 1 Camp

Next up: the “Safe and Green Goals League”, where every goal scored plants a tree - linking sports, safety, and sustainability.

Together, we’re building safer, cleaner, and stronger communities.

Every action counts. Every voice matters.

When Strength Becomes Her Story

Life has never been easy for her. A widowed mother of five from Koya, Iraq has carried the weight of raising her children alone for years - working hard, baking bread at home every day to make ends meet.

But when she faced a painful experience of online blackmail, she refused to stay silent.
With trembling hands, she reached out to the WRO protection center, remembering the support she once received there.

The response was immediate. The caseworker and lawyer stood by her side - offering legal help, psychosocial support, and most importantly, reassurance that she was not alone.

Within days, action was taken, and her safety was restored.
More importantly, she regained her confidence - realizing her strength and her right to live without fear.

“I’m not that weak woman anymore. I know my worth and my rights.”

With the support from WRO Iraq - Women Rehabilitation Organization Iraq and DanChurchAid, Today, she continues to work hard for her children, stronger and more aware of her own power. Her story is a reminder that no one should face such challenges alone - support and protection can make all the difference.

“My name is M.M., I’m 46 years old from Talafar, Iraq, and a mother of a 5-year-old boy. Life changed when I lost my husband two years ago. I faced poverty, discrimination, and was denied my rights as a widow. In Turkey and later back in Iraq, I endured violence, pressure, and silence.”
But silence was not the answer.
With support WRO Iraq - Women Rehabilitation Organization Iraq and DanChurchAid, I received psychosocial care, legal advice, ongoing follow-up and guidance to stand up for myself and my child. Step by step, she found courage again. She’s now in the process of securing my son’s national ID so he can start kindergarten next year.
“I was constantly anxious, nervous, and sad. I stayed silent, thinking patience was the only solution.”
This is not just M.M.’s story; it is a story of resilience, dignity, and the power of support.
Together, we can ensure women like M.M. are never left without protection, rights, and hope.

40-year-old Shahba, has lived a life of incredible hardship. After years of displacement and pain, carrying on her shoulders the responsibility of raising four children, she returned to her hometown, Mosul.

“The fear during our displacement exhausted me… we kept moving from one house to another. Always on the run. We had no stability and no sense of safety.”

Shahba explains that one of the places they sought refuge was an abandoned and dilapidated building. As they were arranging their belongings, one of the house’s walls collapsed, falling on her young child. She tried to save him, screaming at the top of her voice, but death was faster. Her son died in her arms, leaving in her heart a wound that could never heal. “My little boy had no fault, he was only a victim of a life we never chose,” says Shahba.

Today, Shahba is trying to rise from the ashes, trying to be both mother and father to her four children. Her husband was killed in the war while they were displaced.

She searches for a glimmer of hope amid the darkness, and for legal and humanitarian support to start anew, after being deprived of life’s simplest rights because of choices that were never hers. She did not give up. She sought help from the WRO Center in Mosul, which, through its lawyer, helped her legally document her story.

Witness statements were collected, and Shahba went to court with the lawyer. She managed to get a national ID for herself – and a death certificate for her deceased son. With her ID, Shahba can obtain a ration card for food and a national ID for her other children, allowing them to be enrolled in school.

Despite the pain that still lives in her heart, Shahba felt that the step of officially proving her son’s death was the beginning of reclaiming her rights and dignity as a mother, and that her voice had finally begun to be heard after years of silence and fear.

Now, with the help of WRO Iraq - Women Rehabilitation Organization Iraq and Folkekirkens Nødhjælp ,she is getting on her feet again. For herself but more than that for her children.

✨ Local voices, stronger impact!
On August 13, 19 national organizations and 25+ representatives came together in Iraq for a Co-Creation Workshop under the ERC Local SPACE initiative, funded by the EU initiative and implemented by a DCA-led consortium with partners Trócaire, CAFOD, Christian Aid, and the Humanitarian Leadership Academy across six countries.

The initiative is about building a strong national network where local organizations lead the way in shaping humanitarian action.
Through Local SPACE, 20 national organizations in Iraq will access tailored capacity building, mentorship, joint advocacy, and global connections, all to strengthen locally led responses that last.

“It was inspiring to connect with other national organizations and see how, by uniting in this network, local organizations can collectively lead with a stronger voice and deliver greater impact (in Iraq).” Representative of a national organization

Facing Online Violence 🫸🏼

“I wasn’t living, I was merely enduring. As long as my children needed me, I had to stay standing.” For years, 41-year-old Z.H., a displaced widow, carried the weight of raising five children alone.

But her strength was shaken when her former brother-in-law tried to blackmail her with photos of her and her daughter that he used AI to manipulate. “That night, my heart dropped out of my chest. The fear of my daughter’s dignity being violated was unbearable.”

She then picked up the phone and called her Women Rehabilitation Organization (WRO) caseworker- “She answered immediately, listened calmly. I didn’t feel alone.” Within hours, the caseworker and lawyer were taking action, developing a safety plan, providing psychological support, and pushing the case forward. Days later, the blackmailer was arrested.

“When I found out the law could stand by me, I felt my dignity restored,” Z.H. said, she later chose to drop the case, not out of fear, but because he had been punished, apologized, and promised never to harm her again.

Today, she sells food items to support her children.

Khawaja Khalil, a village in Ninewa, Iraq, was abandoned in 2014 due to the presence of landmines and explosives. Many families, forced to flee, began returning in 2017. However, farming remained impossible until IHSCO cleared 31,391 square meters of contaminated land and removed 149 explosive devices. Today, agriculture has resumed, Ahmed tells us.

Ahmed, 36, returned with his family after fleeing the area in 2014 due to the ISIS conflict. He lives with his two wives and nine children in the same house. The family now cultivates crops and raises ducks and poultry. After returning, he found his land devastated by war remnants explosives, mines, and chemicals left behind from the conflict.

The village’s mukhtar also highlights the transformation since ISIS’s defeat and says, “In 2017, we returned to find the minefields just 50- 100 meters from our homes. There were animals and children everywhere, it was like stepping on death.”

📌 Iraq is thirsty for solutions

Iraq is thirsty for solutions and currently facing one of the worst water crises in its history. Compounded climate crises have reduced water availability by over 40%, decreased per capita water access, and farming communities are struggling to survive.

Despite the odds, Wafa supported by IHSCO now cultivates vegetables and olive trees, turning a once-barren plot into a farm it fills her with joy, she said.

Wafa is a mother of four, they rush to the fields after school and are equally excited to see the plants grow.
