Enlil Center for Environment and Sustainable Development Independent think tank in Baghdad. Research, analysis and open data on Iraq's climate, water, energy, economy and governance · enlilcenter.org

Enlil Center for Environment and Sustainable Development is an independent, non-profit think tank based in Baghdad, founded in 2024. We produce evidence-based research, policy analysis and open data across five pillars — climate, water, energy, economy and governance — so that decisions about Iraq's future rest on Iraqi evidence. Our Iraq Data Hub publishes national indicators with their sources and downloadable data, and every article we publish ends with the datasets and sources it draws on. Evidence should be checkable. We work with Iraqi institutions, civil society and international partners to turn research into practical, locally anchored solutions. Today, we stand with over 1 billion people across 193 countries in celebrating 🌱

At Enlil Center for Environment and Sustainable Development, every day is Earth Day. Iraq stands at the frontlines of the climate crisis — facing water scarcity, desertification, extreme heat, and displacement. Yet, it is also a country full of resilience and potential.

On this day, we reaffirm our commitment to:
🔵 Evidence-based climate policy and research
🔵 Empowering communities in water, agriculture & energy
🔵 Bridging government, civil society, and international partners
🔵 Building an Iraq that is resilient to climate threats

The Earth doesn't wait. Neither do we.

💧 Water Security is at Risk — and the numbers don't lie.

According to UNESCWA. all GCC countries fall below the 500 m³/person/year threshold for water scarcity. Nearly 40 million people depend on desalinated water from the Gulf. And conflict only makes things worse.

At Enlil Center, we track these crises — and work to turn data into policy.

'Brent Crude is recording its most violent year-to-date price movement in three decades — not from ordinary supply-demand shifts, but from the escalating Middle East conflict, direct strikes on energy infrastructure, and repeated threats to close the Strait of Hormuz. Yet Iraq is showing strategic resilience by resuming large-scale overland exports through the Al-Waleed border crossing to Syria,' writes Othman Kareem.

🚨 From Enlil Research Team

The True Cost of Inaction: Climate change could slash Iraq’s GDP by up to 3.9% by 2030 if urgent action is not taken.

Our analysis shows how water scarcity, desertification, extreme heat, and local governance failures are already costing billions — and why national climate plans will fail without real reform at the municipal level.
