Janhit Manch, a leading judicial activist NGO of the country, founded by Bhagvanji Raiyani in 2002, has filed about 45 Public Interest Litigations in the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court. Janhit Manch and five other NGOs on 12-6-2002 held a massive demonstration in Mumbai's Azad Maidan under the banner of SAVE JUDICIARY-SAVE NATION but thereafter due to paucity of manpower and material, the
tempo couldn't be sustained. The movement was revived in 2006 when Janhit Manch had published a 4 page brochure on SAVE JUDICIARY-SAVE NATION campaign and 3000 copies of the brochure were mailed to all members of Parliament, Judges of the High Court and the Supreme Court, members of Bar Council of India, State Bar Councils, NGOs, Corporates, philanthropists and prominent citizens, all over the country. In the year 2006, Janhit Manch proposed to Prashant Bhushan, a senior advocate of the Supreme Court to hold a convention on judicial accountability and reforms and also to file a PIL in the Supreme Court on the issue, mainly for clearing the backlog of over 30 million cases pending in the Indian Courts which he readily agreed. He had already set up an NGO in the name of Campaign for Judicial Accountability & Reforms. A convention was organised by him in Delhi with the help of other NGOs during 10-11 March 2007 which was attended by Janhit Manch with 14 delegates. Similar convention for two days was hosted by Janhit Manch during 22-23 Dec. 2007 where an action plan resolution was drafted which was subsequently finalized at Delhi in March 2008.
