From Webinars to the Field: Deepening Engagement for Community Impact in the Himalayas

At Himalay Unnati Mission, our journey of engaging with partner NGOs has been anchored in continuous knowledge sharing through webinarsโ€”creating a strong foundation of learning, dialogue, and alignment.

Building on this, we are now actively engaging with our HUM partners on the groundโ€”co-creating and implementing capacity-building initiatives within their landscapes.

In collaboration with Mountain Forum Himalayas in Garhwal and Nihir Himalayan Sansthan in Kumaon, Uttarakhand, we recently conducted a Rural Happiness Program focused on strengthening community engagement and resilience.

This initiative integrated life skills, emotional well-being, and sustainable development practices, enabling communities to move from awareness to action. A key highlight was the introduction of Sudarshan Kriya from The Art of Living Foundationโ€”supporting individuals in managing stress and enhancing mental clarity.

At the core of this engagement is the 8J Frameworkโ€”a holistic model for sustainable rural transformation:

โœ” 5Js: Jal, Jungle, Jameen, Janwar, Jan
โœ” Janbhagidari: Community participation as co-creators
โœ” Jaankari: Access to knowledge and government schemes
โœ” Jeevika: Pathways to entrepreneurship and livelihoods

This shift marks an important stepโ€”from knowledge dissemination to capacity strengthening, and from virtual engagement to field-level impact.

We remain committed to strengthening partnerships and enabling communities to lead sustainable change across the Himalayan region.

For more than three decades, ACT has been working to promote community based ecotourism, biodiversity conservation, and preservation of indigenous culture and heritage across the Eastern Himalayan landscape.

Through its network of tourism groups, homestays, conservation organisations, rural enterprises, and cultural initiatives, ACT connects a vibrant ecosystem committed to sustainable livelihoods and environmental stewardship.

With ACT joining HUM, new opportunities open for cross regional learning, conservation partnerships, and knowledge exchange across the Himalayan landscapes.

Together, the HUM Consortium now grows stronger with 333 members, working collectively for the ecological, economic, socio cultural, and spiritual wellbeing of the Himalayas.
