Day by Day with Bhagavan
26-12-45 Afternoon
Pointing to Mr. Venkatachalam, (father of the girl Souris who visited Bhagavan a few years ago for the first time and wrote
an account of her experiences in the form of a letter to a friend in the Telugu journal Bharati) Bhagavan said, “He came this morning. I at once asked Dr. Srinivasa Rao also to come and stand by Mr.Venkatachalam and showed them both to all so that none should afterwards mistake the one for the other. They are so much alike. The resemblance was even greater two or three years ago.” A book has recently been received by Bhagavan in which Mr.Venkatachalam’s letters to Mr.C. Diksh*tulu during one year (1938 or 1939?) are published. The portions relating to Bhagavan in those letters were read out by Mr. Venkatachalam in the hall.

Ashtavakra Gita — Chapter 1, Verses 11–13
Verse 11
आत्मा साक्षी विभुः पूर्ण एको मुक्तश्चिदक्रियः ।
असङ्गो निःस्पृहः शान्तो भ्रमात् संसारवानिव ॥
The Self is the witness, all-pervading, complete, one, liberated, consciousness itself, and actionless. It is unattached, desireless, and peaceful. Through illusion, however, it appears as though it were caught up in worldly existence.

Verse 12
कूटस्थं बोधमद्वैतमात्मानं परिभावय ।
आभासोऽहममं त्यक्त्वा भावनां भावयन्तु ते ॥
Know the Self as unchanging, pure awareness, and non-dual. Abandon the identification with the mere appearance of “I” and “mine,” and cultivate the understanding of your true Self.

Verse 13
देहाभिमानपाशेन चिरं बद्धोऽसि पुत्रक ।
बोधोऽहं ज्ञानखड्गेन तन्निष्कृत्य सुखी भव ॥
My child, you have long been bound by the belief that you are the body. Cut this bo***ge with the sword of knowledge—“I am pure awareness”—and be happy.

Recollections of Sri Ramanasramam
(6) WHY WORRY?
Bhagavan’s Jayanti (birthday) is always an important
annual event. The day previous to the celebrations, stotras in
praise of Bhagavan are read in the Hall and in the night there
is feasting. While most of the devotees come in the morning
of the Jayanti day and leave the same evening, some of the
older devotees come a day earlier and leave a day after, so
that they may spend a longer time with Bhagavan. Thus, for
three days at a stretch, there used to be unusual bustle and
activity.
Once the Jayanti fell during the December holidays. So
Gurram Subbaramayya, Krishna Bhikshu and others employed
in service came four or five days in advance. I thought I could
spend time usefully with all of them discussing Bhagavan, but as
ill-luck would have it, I had my period in the early morning of
the day previous to the Jayanti day. I was very much upset and
sat in the verandah of my house brooding over my misfortune.
As I did not turn up at the Ashram at the usual hour,
Subbaramayya came to my place to find out the reason. When I
explained my predicament, he said a few words of consolation
and then went back. On seeing him Bhagavan asked him, “What
is the matter? Why has Nagamma not come?” After mentioning
the cause of my absence, Subbaramayya stated that I was very
much disappointed and depressed. “Why? Why should she be
sorry? She can sit and meditate,” said Bhagavan. Subbaramayya
came to me after lunch and told me about Bhagavan’s
observations. From that day onwards I got confirmed in the view
that there is no need to refrain from the practice of meditation
under such circumstances and what is really important is to get
rid of the impurities of the mind. The same holds good for writing
work also. What Bhagavan said was indeed an injunction coupled
with his grace and kindness.

The person soaked in the “I-am-the-body” idea is the greatest sinner and he is a su***de. The experience of “I-am-the-Self” is the highest virtue. Even a moment’s dhyana to that effect is enough to destroy
all the sanchita Karma. It works like the sun before whom darkness is dispelled. If one remains always in dhyana, can any sin, however heinous it be, survive his dhyana?

Day by Day with Bhagavan
19-7-46
Again today a visitor put questions: I do not understand how to make the enquiry ‘Who am I?’
Bhagavan: Find out whence the ‘I’ arises. Self-enquiry does not mean argument or reasoning such as goes on when you say, “I am not this body, I am not the senses,” etc.: all that may also help but it is not the enquiry. Watch and find out where in the body the ‘I’ arises and fix your mind on that.

Visitor: Will gayatri help?

Bhagavan: What is gayatri? It really means: “Let me concentrate on that which illumines all.” Dhyana really means only concentrating or fixing the mind on the object of dhyana. But meditation is our real nature. If we give up other thoughts what remains is ‘I’ and its nature is dhyana or meditation or jnana, whichever we choose to call it. What is at one time the means later becomes the end; unless meditation or dhyana were the nature of the Self it could not take you to the Self. If the means were not of the nature of the goal, it could not bring you to the goal.

ACHIEVEMENT OF THE REAL ALONE MATTERS visitor: The saints Sri Chaitanya and Sri Ramakrishna wept before God and achieved success. Is that not the path to follow?
M.: Yes. There was a powerful force (sakti) drawing them on through all those experiences. Trust in that huge power to take you on to your goal. Tears are often considered a sign of weakness. These great persons were certainly not weak. These manifestations are only passing signs of the great current carrying them on. We must look to the end achieved.
D.: Can this physical body be made to disappear into nothingness?
M.: Why this question? Can you not find out if you are the body?
D.: Can we have disappearance from sight (antardhana) like the yogis Vasishta or Viswamitra?
M.: These are only physical matters. Is that the essential object of our interest? Are you not the Self? Why trouble about other matters? Take the essence; reject other learned theories as useless. They who think that physical disappearance counts in freedom are mistaken. No such thing is needed. You are not the body; what does it matter if it disappears in one way or another? There is no great merit in such phenomena. In what does superiority or inferiority consist? Achievement of the Real alone matters. The loss of the ‘I’ is the main fact, and not the loss of the body. Identity of the Self with the body is the real bo***ge. Leave off the false notion and perceive intuitively the Real. That alone matters.
If you melt a gold ornament before testing it to be gold, what matters it how it is melted, whole or in parts, or of what shape the ornament was? All that you are interested in is if it is gold. The dead man sees not his body. It is the survivor that thinks about the manner in which the body is parted from. The realised have no death with or without the body, the realised man is equally aware and sees no difference. To him the one state is not superior to the other.
To an outsider also thef fortunes of a liberated one’s body need not be of any concern; mind your business. Realise the Self; after realisation there will be time to
think of what form of death is preferable to you.
It is the false identity of the Self with the body that causes the idea of preference, etc. Are you the body? Were you aware of it when
you were fast asleep last night? No! What is it that exists now and troubles you? It is ‘I’. Get rid of it and be happy.

A QUESTION was asked about the Upanishadic passage, “The Supreme Spirit is subtler than the subtlest and larger than the largest.”
M.: Even the structure of the atom has been found by the mind.
Therefore the mind is subtler than the atom. That which is behind the mind, namely the individual soul, is subtler than the mind.
Further, the Tamil saint Manickavachagar has said of the specks dancing in a beam of sunlight, that if each represents a universe, the whole sunlight will represent the Supreme Being. ~Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi, Talk 15.

Day by Day with Bhagavan
24-3-46
I referred to Swami Sambuddhananda’s last question, what to do with those who have lost faith in God and who, if asked to find out their source, may say, ‘Our parents are the source from which we spring.’

Bhagavan: Fancy a man saying our source is our parents.

I asked, “But what about a pure materialist, who does not believe in God. How are we to deal with him?”

Bhagavan: He will come gradually, step by step, to find out the source of ‘I’. First, adversity will make him feel that there is a power beyond his control, upsetting his plans. Then, he will begin with rituals, ceremonial worship, and through japa, kirtan, dhyana, go on to vichara.

I asked Bhagavan, “What is the fire that is called the Nachiketa fire in the Kathopanishad?”

Bhagavan: “I don’t know what exactly it is. It must refer to some fire ritual. These terms are generally symbolical. Only today, I saw in the current number of the Ramakrishna Vijayam an article on the Five Fires.” So saying, he took up the journal and read out to us almost the whole of the article. It refers to the svarga loka,

the megha mandala, the earth, man and woman as the five fires, and gives allegorical interpretations for all the details.

HOW TO CONTROL THE MIND?
M.: Catch hold of the mind.
D.: How?
M.: What is mind? Find it out. It is only an aggregate of thoughts.

D.: How to root out s*xual impulse?
M.: By rooting out the false idea of the body being Self. There is no s*x in the Self.
D.: How to realise it?
M.: Because you think you are the body, you see another as the body.
Difference in s*x arises. But you are not the body. Be the real Self.
Then there is no s*x.
