Tips for Asthma Patients to Stay Safe This Diwali...Diwali is a time of joy, lights, and togetherness, but it can pose significant health risks for people with asthma. Asthma, a condition caused by inflammation of the lungs, makes the nerve endings in the airways highly sensitive. During an asthma attack, the airway linings swell, restricting airflow. Common symptoms include breathlessness, wheezing, and chest tightness. The pollution from firecrackers and other festive activities can worsen these symptoms, making breathing difficult and potentially triggering severe attacks. To help asthma patients stay safe during Diwali, here are some practical tips to reduce the risk of triggering symptoms:

Stay Indoors– People with respiratory issues, such as asthma, should limit their exposure to smoke by staying indoors. Taking medications as prescribed by doctors before spending time around pollutants is essential. If severe shortness of breath occurs, seek medical attention immediately.

Wear a Mask– Wearing a mask can help prevent fumes from fireworks from irritating your airways when celebrating Diwali. This reduces the chances of a sudden asthma attack. Additionally, wearing protective eyewear helps keep harmful particles and fumes away from your eyes.Always Carry Your Inhalers– Regular use of controller inhalers can significantly lower the risk of an asthma attack. Follow your doctor’s instructions and take your medications daily. During Diwali, airborne triggers are common, so always keep your relief inhaler nearby for quick symptom relief.Avoid Alcohol– Alcohol, especially wine and beer, can trigger asthma symptoms in some people. The chemicals and preservatives in these drinks can irritate the airways, leading to wheezing or breathing difficulties. With pollution levels already high during Diwali, it’s best for asthma patients to avoid alcohol.

Stay Away from Dust– Diwali cleaning can stir up dust mites and allergens, which are common asthma triggers. To minimize risk, asthma sufferers should avoid being in rooms while they are being cleaned. If you must clean, wear a mask and ensure good ventilation to reduce exposure to airborne allergens.By following these tips, asthma patients can enjoy a safer and healthier Diwali celebration.
