Heatwaves Are Not a Weather Event. They Are a Systemic Risk Multiplier.
Multidimensional heatwave impact pathways trace how extreme heat events cascade through societal, economic, and environmental systems. These multi-order effects are highly interconnected, with rising temperatures not only causing direct physiological harm but also triggering cascading infrastructural failures, food crises, and capability deprivation.
When we think of a heatwave, we often imagine rising temperatures and personal discomfort. Yet extreme heat rarely acts alone. It triggers a chain reaction (domino effect) across interconnected systems—health, water, food, energy, transport, livelihoods, ecosystems, and the economy.
A heatwave overloads hospitals, reduces labour productivity, worsens air pollution, increases electricity demand, strains power grids, disrupts transport networks, intensifies water scarcity, reduces agricultural yields, accelerates food inflation, and deepens existing social inequalities. The burden falls disproportionately on those with heightened vulnerability (because of greater exposure, higher sensitivity, and lower adaptive capacity): persons with disabilities, older adults, children, outdoor workers, low-income communities, and other vulnerable populations.
This is the essence of a polycrisis—where a single hazard cascades through multiple sectors, creating compounding and reinforcing impacts. Climate change is therefore not merely an environmental challenge; it is a threat multiplier, a public health challenge, a development challenge, an economic challenge, and a social justice challenge.
Building resilience requires moving beyond reactive disaster response toward systems thinking—integrating climate adaptation, universal accessibility, sustainable urban planning, ecosystem restoration, resilient infrastructure, and inclusive governance.

This initiative's aim is to trigger, catalyse, and nudge inclusive and sustainable change by upholding the ‘tattva’ (principles) of Dharma (Righteous actions and Kartavya/Duties to preserve the Ṛta — cosmic order and rhythm), Nyāya (equity and justice), Nīti (policy and ethical governance), and Pancha Rnas (Five Fundamental Debts). This is pursued through cognisance, dissemination of knowledge, awareness creation, and the promotion of universally accessible and inclusive Śīkṣā (environmental education).
