Miniature painting has its origins in various cultures, but it notably flourished in Persia (present-day Iran), India, and the Mughal Empire during the 16th to 18th centuries. In Persia, miniature painting emerged as an art form in the 13th century, influenced by Chinese and Islamic artistic traditions. The Mughal emperors in India further refined the technique, blending Persian styles with indigenous Indian elements.
The Government of India has recognized the significance of miniature painting as an integral part of the country's cultural heritage by designating it as a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This recognition highlights the historical and artistic importance of Indian miniature painting traditions, protecting them from unauthorized use and ensuring their preservation for future generations.
