Discover the expressive world of Mayurbhanj Chhau ✨
Here, the dancer’s face carries the story, shaped by disciplined movement, precise gestures, and carefully crafted makeup that defines each character.
Odisha’s distinctive maskless Chhau tradition opens with Rookmar Nacha, a sword-and-shield practice that builds control, balance, and focus. These techniques flow into expansive narratives drawn from mythology, cosmology, and social life, where athletic leaps, sculptural postures, and quiet stillness work together to convey meaning.

The Handicraft & Handloom Fair 2025 at City Centre 2, Kolkata showcased a vibrant array of traditional crafts, with many of the artists hailing from Nimdih, Jharkhand and nearby villages.

Among the many exhibits, the fair featured the unique artistry of Kashi Grass which is tall forest grass skillfully transformed into sturdy, sustainable baskets and trays using palm leaves. It was showcased by artists like Balika Sabar and Donki Sabar. Sabai grass weaving also stood out, not only for its natural beauty but for the inspiring stories of the women who practice it. For artists like Dipali Mura from Purulia, West Bengal, the fair was an opportunity to bring her eco-friendly Sabai products—spanning from wall hangings to tote bags, coasters, and storage baskets—directly to the city. Additionally, Riju Mahali from Jharkhand displayed modern Basketry items, while Usha Rani Naik and Malati Naik from Odisha presented their own eco-friendly Sabai products.

The fair celebrated these artisans who keep traditional crafts alive while adapting them for today’s world. Visitors didn’t just buy handmade items—they took home pieces of India’s living heritage. For those who want to explore further, a visit to Nimdih and its surrounding villages offers an unforgettable experience of rich handicraft traditions and the communities that preserve them.
