🌿 **Welcome to the Pune Sustainability Map!**

We are delighted to welcome R. N. Shah English Medium Primary School & Dr. G. G. Shah English Medium High School and its Principal, Mrs. Archana Dharu, to the Pune Sustainability Map.

At a time when sustainability is often taught as a lesson, this school has made it a part of everyday school culture.

Welcome to the Pune Sustainability Map

Huzurpaga's Sou. Shobhatai Rasiklal Dhariwal English Medium School
Every movement begins with someone willing to take the first step.
When Mission City Chakra was still an idea, Huzurpaga's Sou. Shobhatai Rasiklal English Medium School became the first school to implement its three plastic-free school policies.

Since then, the school has continued to reaffirm this commitment every academic year by encouraging parents to pledge the use of:
✅ Steel water bottles
✅ Steel tiffin boxes
✅ No plastic or laminated textbook covers

Under the leadership of Principal Mrs. Priyadarshani Purohit, sustainability has become part of the school's culture.

Alongside Mission City Chakra's initiatives, the school has adopted dry leaf composting, ceramic cups instead of disposables, steel glasses for meetings, a terrace garden, and Nirmalya composting.

This story reminds us that lasting behaviour change is built not through one-time campaigns, but through consistent institutional leadership.

🌿 Welcome to the Pune Sustainability Map: Huzurpaga English Medium School, Mangdewadi, Katraj

Some schools teach environmental science.

Some schools help children experience it every day.

Under the leadership of Principal Mrs. Kirti Pandit, Huzurpaga English Medium School has created a beautiful circular system.

🌼 Families bring Nirmalya from home.

🌱 The school converts it into compost.

🥬 The compost nourishes the school's vegetable and flower gardens.

🦋 Nature responds with blooming flowers and butterflies.

What makes this initiative special is that it goes beyond the school campus. Local residents are also encouraged to contribute Nirmalya instead of disposing it into rivers or mixed waste, creating a simple community-led circular economy.

The school has also implemented Mission City Chakra's three plastic waste reduction appeals by encouraging students to bring:

✅ Steel water bottles

✅ Non-plastic textbook covers

Welcome to the Pune Sustainability Map

Nexus Westend Mall, Aundh

Sometimes, reducing waste doesn't require a new technology. It simply requires changing the default.

At the food court of Nexus Westend Mall, branded glass ketchup bottles are placed on every dining table in elegant stainless-steel holders. Since ketchup is readily available, individual sachets are no longer the default option and are provided only when requested.

A small operational change like this has the potential to prevent thousands of unnecessary multi-layer plastic sachets from being used every year.

Even more encouraging is that successful initiatives at one Nexus mall can be replicated across the entire Nexus Malls network, multiplying the impact.

Congratulations to Mr. Pramod Naralkar, Owner, and Mr. Santoshkumar Jain, Dy General Manager, for this thoughtful initiative.

🎉 **Welcome to the Pune Sustainability Map, Sansar!**

What if we told you that one of Pune's finest examples of the Circular Economy began not yesterday, but more than 70 years ago?

Established in 1955, Sansar on Bajirao Road has quietly practiced one of the most sustainable business models imaginable—rent instead of own.

From weddings and community feasts to blood donation camps, naming ceremonies and cultural events, thousands of people have borrowed rather than bought utensils, furniture and event essentials.

Long before terms like Circular Economy, Sharing Economy and Zero Waste became popular, Sansar was already putting these principles into practice.

Today, under the stewardship of Mr. Satyajit Kulkarni, the third generation of the family, the business continues to demonstrate that sustainability is not always about new technology. Sometimes it is about preserving timeless ideas that make economic, social and environmental sense.

How many disposable plates were never used because reusable alternatives were available?

How many tonnes of waste have been prevented over the past seven decades?

Perhaps no one has measured it.

But the impact is immense.

Today, we are delighted to launch the Pune Sustainability Map.

Across Pune, thousands of citizens, schools, restaurants, shops, offices and institutions are quietly adopting sustainable practices every day. A school insisting on steel tiffins. A restaurant eliminating disposables. An office composting its organic waste. A shop refusing plastic bags.

These efforts deserve recognition and visibility.

The Pune Sustainability Map is our attempt to literally put these Green Champions on the map and create a living directory of sustainability initiatives across the city.

This project has been built through collaboration and community spirit. We are especially grateful to our developer friends, Soham Pawar and Atharv Karalkar, who generously contributed their time, skills, and enthusiasm to help bring this idea to life.

But this map does not belong to us alone.

It belongs to Pune.

We invite every citizen to help us discover and celebrate sustainability champions around us. If you know a school, shop, restaurant, housing society, office or institution doing something inspiring for the environment, tell us about it.

Mission City Chakra is proud to launch the Pune Sustainability Map on the occasion of World Environment Day, tomorrow.

Why on this day?

The theme of World Environment Day 2026, "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future", reminds us that meaningful climate action does not always begin with large international agreements or technological breakthroughs. It often begins with simple choices made by individuals, schools, businesses and communities every day.

Across Pune, countless sustainability champions are already reducing waste, conserving resources and inspiring responsible consumption. A school that promotes steel tiffins, a restaurant that avoids disposables, a housing society that composts its waste, or a shop that refuses plastic bags — each of these actions contributes to a more climate-resilient future.

The Pune Sustainability Map is our effort to identify, celebrate and connect these local solutions.

Because before we can replicate good practices, we must first discover them.

Before we can scale solutions, we must make them visible.

And before we ask people to change, we must show them that change is already happening.

This World Environment Day, let us put Pune's sustainability champions on the map — literally.

Climate action is not somewhere else. It is already happening in Pune. The Pune Sustainability Map simply helps us find it.
