Their feedback also highlighted strong interest in future hands-on programs covering AI and data tools, statistical and qualitative analysis, scientific visualization, research writing, peer review, and publication readiness.

The CAIES Foundation is pleased to announce the launch of its joint publication with the Center on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP), Artificial Intelligence for Rural Development: Transforming Technology into Reality for Rural Welfare.

The handbook explores how Artificial Intelligence can move from technological potential to practical, responsible, and scalable solutions for rural communities. It highlights applications across agriculture, healthcare, education, water and natural resource management, food security, disaster preparedness, and rural development planning, while addressing critical considerations such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, digital infrastructure, responsible AI, and community trust.

Authored by Dr. Sushant K. Singh, Dr. Robert W. Taylor, Dr. Venkatamallu Thadaboina, and Dr. P. Chandra Shekhara, the publication brings together perspectives on AI, sustainability, and rural development to help institutions move from understanding AI to identifying and implementing meaningful use cases.

Designed for policymakers, rural development professionals, agricultural scientists, researchers, NGOs, development organizations, and technology practitioners, the handbook aims to strengthen AI readiness and promote inclusive, sustainable, people-centered rural development.

For CAIES, this publication represents another step toward our mission of making emerging technologies accessible, responsible, and relevant to real-world development challenges, particularly for communities that can benefit most from technological innovation.

We are delighted to announce that the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Environmental Sustainability (CAIES) Foundation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Dr. C. V. Raman University, Vaishali, Bihar.

This strategic collaboration aims to transform the University into a 𝟑𝟔𝟎-𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐀𝐈-𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐬—integrating Artificial Intelligence across teaching, learning, research, administration, innovation, and community engagement. Together, we also aspire to advance the ambitious vision of achieving 𝟏𝟎𝟎% 𝐀𝐈 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐁𝐢𝐡𝐚𝐫.

The presentation highlighted how AI, Geospatial Intelligence, Generative AI, and Responsible AI can be integrated to empower sustainability professionals, strengthen climate adaptation efforts, and support evidence-based decision-making.

As sustainability challenges become increasingly complex, we believe the future lies in developing AI-enabled practitioners who can translate data, technology, and environmental intelligence into actionable and responsible solutions.

The presentation focused on how Artificial Intelligence, predictive modeling, and decision-support systems can help assess community vulnerability under changing environmental and hydrogeological conditions.

A major emphasis was placed on integrating socioeconomic dimensions with environmental and climate data to make vulnerability assessment more realistic and actionable.

One of the key messages from the discussion was that AI models become truly meaningful only when they are grounded in strong contextual and domain knowledge. Environmental systems are highly complex, interconnected, and location-specific. Without a scientific understanding of hydrology, climate interactions, geology, ecology, and community realities, AI models risk becoming technically sophisticated but scientifically weak or difficult to interpret.

During the PopUp session, I highlighted that meaningful and explainable AI for environmental systems requires:

• High-quality and context-aware data acquisition
• Deep collaboration between domain scientists and AI researchers
• Scientifically informed feature engineering and model development
• Explainable AI approaches that stakeholders and communities can trust
• Integration of local socioeconomic and environmental realities into decision-making systems

A major takeaway was that the future of environmental resilience research lies not in AI alone, but in the convergence of AI, environmental science, and human-centered understanding.
