"India is reading, but not everyone is turning the page.
Our country’s literacy rate has reached about 80.9%, yet that still means 1 in 5 Indians above the age of 7 cannot read or write.
The gaps are even sharper when we zoom in:
– Cities are close to 90% literate, but rural India is still in the low 70s.
– Men are far ahead of women in almost every state.
– Some regions like Mizoram, Kerala and Goa have literacy levels above 95%, while large states like Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh are still in the mid‑70s.
Behind every percentage point is a child who has never owned a book.
A child who is curious. A child who is capable. A child who just needs a chance.
That’s why we started Project Kitab.
Our simple promise: If you can read this post, you can help someone learn to read their first word.
One book may not change the literacy rate overnight.
But it can change one child’s life forever – and that’s where every 100% literate India begins.
