DOSTI DOSTI - Democratic Outreach for Secular Transformation of India A clear nexus between corporate- communal forces is aiding to promote the Hindutva agenda.

In recent years we have witnessed an incessant attack on the secular and democratic fabric of our country by the RSS-BJP led government and its fringe organizations like the Bajrang Dal, VHP and others. We are aware that there is a sustained attempt to undermine the basic structure of our Constitution. Along with the Central government, the State Governments of BJP ruled states are increasingly be

coming authoritarian by crushing any expression of dissent against their policies. These governments under the patronage of the Sangh Parivar have indulged in polarisation of the population by their politics of divisiveness and by brazenly targeting minorities, Dalits and the marginalised through extra-parliamentary means and hate speeches. We continue to see the sad aftermath of blatant ethnic cleansing in Manipur. Atrocities against women and tribals have aggravated to almost a point of no return. In view of the above, secular, democratic and peace-loving individuals and groups have come together to form a broad based platform called DOSTI (Democratic Outreach for Secular Transformation of India).Various mass organizations and NGOs that are already engaged in fighting against communalism and politics of divisiveness are part of this platform. We know how so many of us are extremely concerned about the prevailing situation in India and are equally committed to safeguard the secular and democratic values of our constitution that has guaranteed preserving the multilingual, multireligious, multicultural character of Indian society. We would like to invite you and through you all the concerned individuals and organisations to strengthen our fight against the divisive politics of communal forces. We are looking forward to your help and cooperation in all aspects to make this effort a landmark action in our fight for peace, justice and communal harmony.

DEMOCRATIC OUTREACH FOR SECULAR TRANSFORMATION OF INDIA (DOSTI)

PRESS RELEASE

On 21 August, 2024 a group of people, protesting defamatory statements made against Islam and Prophet Mohammed in Maharashtra’s Nashik district, attacked the Kotwali police station in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhatarpur district. Mohan Yadav, the Chief Minister of the state immediately directed the police to deal sternly with those involved in attacking the police station.

Within hours, the local administration and police demolished the house of Haji Shahzad Ali, blaming him for leading the mob. This was followed by wide scale arrests of Muslim men and parading them in public. In support of the police action, a BJP MLA described the attack on the police station as similar to terrorism and promised more such penal action in future.

This latest incident of demolishing houses of minorities and the public brutalization of Muslims in BJP ruled states in the country once again confirms that the saffron party has no respect for India’s constitutionally established judicial process in its attempt to demonize and silence the minorities.

DOSTI views with concern and alarm, this sickening pattern of violence against minorities by BJP governments using the machinery of the state. The spectacle of bulldozing of Muslim houses and parading of alleged Muslim criminals should remind us of the public lynching of blacks in America by white supremacists.

DOSTI demands that due process as established by law be observed in bringing to justice the culprits of the attack on the police station, the subsequent demolition of Haji Shahzad Ali and the parading of arrested Muslim youth. The Supreme Court of India must take suo moto action in this connection, if the rule of law is to survive in this county.
