DEMOCRATIC OUTREACH FOR SECULAR TRANSFORMATION OF INDIA (DOSTI)
PRESS RELEASE
On 21 August, 2024 a group of people, protesting defamatory statements made against Islam and Prophet Mohammed in Maharashtra’s Nashik district, attacked the Kotwali police station in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhatarpur district. Mohan Yadav, the Chief Minister of the state immediately directed the police to deal sternly with those involved in attacking the police station.
Within hours, the local administration and police demolished the house of Haji Shahzad Ali, blaming him for leading the mob. This was followed by wide scale arrests of Muslim men and parading them in public. In support of the police action, a BJP MLA described the attack on the police station as similar to terrorism and promised more such penal action in future.
This latest incident of demolishing houses of minorities and the public brutalization of Muslims in BJP ruled states in the country once again confirms that the saffron party has no respect for India’s constitutionally established judicial process in its attempt to demonize and silence the minorities.
DOSTI views with concern and alarm, this sickening pattern of violence against minorities by BJP governments using the machinery of the state. The spectacle of bulldozing of Muslim houses and parading of alleged Muslim criminals should remind us of the public lynching of blacks in America by white supremacists.
DOSTI demands that due process as established by law be observed in bringing to justice the culprits of the attack on the police station, the subsequent demolition of Haji Shahzad Ali and the parading of arrested Muslim youth. The Supreme Court of India must take suo moto action in this connection, if the rule of law is to survive in this county.

President, DOSTI
