Say no to air-conditioning for our environment

Say no to air-conditioning for our environment This page is created to spread awareness about the harmful effects of air-conditioning on the environment and health. Air-conditioners (A.C. or aircon.) A.C.

have become a very common gadget used to make rooms cool. Their use has become widespread and now this luxury is being used on a large scale, so much that people do not think before turning on their air-conditioners in offices, shops and halls even if the weather is pleasant and easily tolerable. However, this habit is proving to be very harmful to both the environment and people's health. Due to

such large amount of use of air-conditioning, the earth is getting hotter and hotter. is a major factor of global warming. Through this page, we are creating awareness regarding this human-induced disaster. If we want to make the environment livable for us and future generations, we will have to control our use of air-conditioning and change our wrong habits. 'A.C.' is perceived by many people only as a comfort that is desirable and should be pursued. This notion must change; the mention of air-conditioning should make people think about the harm caused by it and not it merely as an innocent equipment that is a great boon with no bad consequences. People's attitude has to change. Note - This page is opposed to excessive, unnecessary and irresponsible use of the technology of air-conditioning. We are not against air-conditioning in an absolute sense. There are some instances where the use of A.C. is essential and useful, such as for refrigeration (refrigerators), cold storage, industrial processes, maintaining electrical equipment like internet servers, hospitals, etc.. Other than these, some places have extreme weather conditions where temperatures are very hot and using air-conditioners becomes necessary. However, we are against addiction to air-conditioning. Such excessive use of it when not required is harmful and unethical to yourself and also to nature. It would be good for people to realize this and reduce their A.C. consumption, if not eliminate it, and thus act responsibly. Humans have a quite good capacity to control their body temperature. We should not expect to stay in an environment of the same uniform temperature all year long in all the seaons. Nature does not deserve to suffer the harms of humans' idiotic use of air-conditioning ! This page will give links of various articles about the harms caused by air-conditioning on our environment and health, how this bad habit developed and how we can change our habits to live sustainably so that the environment is not harmed, and at the same time we don't suffer. This page shall also function as a forum to bring people who oppose unnecessary air-conditioning and want to bring change in people's habits and thinking, together and provide a common voice. It will also tell you about eco-friendly ways of staying cool in hot weather.

To prevent people from falling from the non-AC local trains in Mumbai, authorities have decided to install automatic closing doors in them. These coaches will be non-AC with ventilation features such as louvre. This decision has come after a recent tragedy in which four people died by falling from a local train.

It is important to remember that before also demands were made by people to have automatic closing doors in the trains, but the authorities rejected them and claimed that it is not possible to have non-AC trains with closing doors. Instead, the excuse of accidents of people falling was used by them and their supporters to justify bringing more AC trains or conversion to AC coaches. But now due to the public's outcry after the tragedy, they have finally admitted that it is possible to have such doors for safety in the trains without AC !

Technologies such as louvre are good and eco-friendly, which makes them better than relying on air-conditioning. AC is not only environmentally harmful, it is also expensive which will make the fares of trains expensive and unaffordable for common people. Conversion to AC is a tactic to take away services meant for the poor common people and give them to the rich people.

The government still has the intention to convert trains to AC, which is harmful. Poor people might get saved from falling, but they will suffer from lost livelihood due to being unable to travel due to expensive fares. So, it is necessary for people to pressurize the authorities to ensure that AC trains are not increased, and public transport is expanded in an eco-friendly way. This requires a comprehensive approach. The bus services are inadequate and the fares have recently been increased. If they are reduced and bus services are improved, along with starting bus lanes, the crowds in trains will drastically reduce.

The new design will feature louvred doors and roof-mounted ventilation units to address long-standing concerns over inadequate airflow-an issue brought into sharp focus by today's tragedy in whicn four people died.

Experts say there are also ways to cut down on the problem with air conditioners – how much energy they use – by using other methods to keep cool.

Abundant green spaces, shading, water bodies and clever ventilation are among the more sustainable “passive cooling strategies” suggested by Radhika Khosla, associate professor at Oxford University’s Smith School of Enterprise and Environment.

Good article.
