At Ahthiyabari Chowk in Baksa district, a simple idea is lighting up an entire market.
Chandan Krishna Baro saw how unreliable electricity was limiting business for local shopkeepers. Instead of accepting it, he created a system that now provides lighting to nearly 80 small businesses — helping them stay open longer and serve more customers.
Earlier, this setup depended on an inverter charged by erratic grid electricity, leading to high costs and frequent disruptions.
With support from SANJOG, in collaboration with SELCO Foundation, this system has now been transitioned to solar power. Today, it is more reliable, cost-efficient, and environmentally sustainable.
The impact goes beyond lighting. Extended business hours mean increased income, stronger enterprises, and better livelihoods for the entire market community.
This is a story of local leadership, innovation, and what becomes possible when clean energy meets community-driven solutions.
