We are expanding our after-school tutoring sessions to include needy kids from the neighborhood who can't afford tutoring sessions but need the extra academic support. These kids are identified by their schoolteachers or our teachers as being deficient in the basic needs in their homes and/or are being raised by a single mother or relative.

They join the kids at our home for after-school tutoring and receive each day a nutritious afternoon snack of milk, hard-boiled egg, protein powder, and a little bit of junk food. We pay their school fees and are able to monitor their progress and attendance by requiring them to join our tutoring sessions.

Our after-school teachers have proven themselves to be quality, caring teachers of our kids, as our kids have excelled in school -- even having come from destitute backgrounds -- and continue to do well in their adult lives.

Krishnappa is from Mangalore but found himself stuck in Mysore, unable to get home after suffering a stroke.

We got him a bus ticket, and a very nice family on the bus offered to watch over him during the journey. Such kindness is what's needed in today's world, everywhere. Let's all do our part.

We met Murthy S a few days ago; he stayed on the sidewalk near the Mysore jail and ITI centre. The man at a tea stall helped him by storing what little he had in a safe place.

Murthy was in a way the ideal case -- he immediately said "yes" when we asked him if he wanted to be placed in an old-age home, so we were able to make that happen in a day. We would like all cases to be as easy as that, where the homeless person is wiling to be placed in shelter and leave his surroundings. But often, they are unwilling because of comfort, fear of the unknown, or just having something they can control and have a say over -- where they sleep -- as inadequate as it might be.

Recently, Mysore opened a shelter for beggars, the first of its kind in the city. They currently house 450 individuals and have capacity for 700. No direct admission is allowed; instead, the public is told to dial 112 and provide information on the beggar's location. The police and welfare department then take over, visit the individual at his location, and take him or her to their facility. Capacity of seven hundred is by no means adequate for the homeless population in this city, but it is at least, finally, a start.

It's always nice to hear from our former residents of our homeless recovery center, Kumari's Ashram.

Recently, we heard from Babu, who was with us for months during his recovery from a bad case of tuberculosis. He left us at the end of April, headed back to Goa, where he was a chef. He let us know that he's back at work as a chef and is earning a very nice monthly salary.

Let's wish Babu continued success in Goa, and thank you for supporting his recovery.

Our kids have always like to win awards, and the trend continues.

This past year in 7th grade, Akash had a perfect attendance record at school! Congrats to Akash, who has been with us now for 10 years and starts high school this month.

Graduation is here for several of our girls! Can you believe it?

This month, Vinuta, Swarana, Lalitha, Thanmaye, and Sowmya graduate from college with their bachelor's degrees. And, Netra graduates with her Master's in Social Work. These girls have lived with since their early years and have grown up to be good young women. Next step - the job search for them, and Sowmya is going to pursue her MBA at a great institution in Bangalore! Wish them luck.

The dilemma of being a Nepali in India.

We recently discovered that being a Nepali in India can present problems because of the "open" nature of the border shared by the two countries. Under the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship, citizens of both nations can effectively cross, live, and work in either country without visas or passports. Typically, the Nepali father shows his citizenship certificate, and entry for the entire family is allowed. Many Nepali families come to India for better job prospects.

However, without a passport, a Nepali child in India is prevented from getting something as simple as a background verification report from the police, a document often required by larger employers.

One of our boys, Hamsaraj, faces this dilemma. He crossed into India legally with his parents when he was age 3 and has lived in Mysore since then, adopting the language and making friends at school. We have helped Hamsa for years with his school fees and after-school tutoring. He excelled in his vocational training course, learning how to cook and work at hotels, and he secured a job offer with one of the largest 5-star hotel chains in India.

However, the company required a police background report, which is when we uncovered this dilemma because that report is not obtainable by Nepalis if they do not have a passport but were able to enter without one. So, in essence and unbeknownst to them and regardless of scholastic achievements, our Nepali children could run into a serious roadblock when seeking employment.

Fortunately for Hamsa, his employer has waived this requirement at least for now, and he and his parents plan to travel to Nepal to secure all of the documentation needed. We are now in the process of ensuring that the other Nepali families we support do similarly so that their kids are not hindered in the future by a (legal) lack of documentation.

We met Santhosh in April on the streets of Mysore. He had a serious injury to his foot but was unable to care for it, being an epileptic and having a developmental disability since childhood.

We admitted him to the hospital, where the doctor recommended amputation because of the seriousness of the infection. His family was tracked down, and his mother (the only one who cared enough) came to Mysore to see him. She was happy to see that he was alive and insisted that he remain with us after his surgery and recovery.

Santhosh is recovering and healing, including being properly treated for his epilepsy. He's currently being fitted for a prosthetic, so that he can resume working and living somewhat of a normal life, hopefully under our watchful eye.

Many lie on the sidewalks of Mysore, unable to recover from their ailments. Our goal is to assist as many as possible regain some functionality or at least relieve some of their suffering. Help us do so by donating at www.operation-shanti.org

Recently, the kids had a great time at GRS Fantasy Water Park! They've been going there for years during the sweltering heat of summer vacation from school in Mysore, and this year was no disappointment.

Even Prajwal, one of our alumnus who now lives and works in Bangalore, came home and joined everyone.
