๐ŸŒฑ Growing Together. Restoring Our Forests.

As part of Van Mahotsav 2026โ€“27, 400 native saplings were planted in the Community Forest Rights (CFR) recognised forest area of Asanewadi, Sudhagad.

The initiative brought together 20 employee volunteers from Indef Manufacturing Limited , Ms. Shreya Sudhir, CSR Head-Bajaj Electricals Foundation, 32 members of the Katkari community, Forest Department officials, the CFRMC, and the Waatavaran Foundation team - turning a plantation drive into a meaningful experience of corporate volunteering, community participation and ecological restoration.

From learning the science behind planting native species to working alongside the local community, the day reinforced an important message: _lasting conservation is built through collective action and community ownership._

Our gratitude to Bajaj Electricals Foundation, Bajaj Indef Manufacturing Limited, Forest Department, CFRMC Asanewadi, Sudhagad Pali, and all the volunteers and community members who made this initiative possible.

From observing biodiversity to creating space for it.

The Nature Connect journey under Mumbai Ekatra concluded with the establishment of a Butterfly Pollinator Garden at VES College of Architecture.

After assessing the siteโ€™s sunlight, soil, drainage, vegetation and accessibility, students, faculty and biodiversity experts worked together to create a pollinator-friendly landscape.

A total of 453 native and butterfly-friendly saplings were planted, including host and nectar plants selected to support butterflies, bees, birds and other beneficial pollinators.

The garden is more than a plantation site. It is a living biodiversity laboratory where students can observe ecological relationships, monitor species and understand how nature-based design works in practice.

The impact of the initiative:
45 students experienced an urban nature trail.78 architecture students received naturalist training.453 native and butterfly-friendly saplings were planted. One permanent outdoor learning space was created.

The formal project may be complete, but its ecological journey continues. Students and faculty will jointly care for the garden, allowing it to grow alongside future generations of learners.

What if every future architect learned to design not only for people, but also for birds, butterflies, plants and ecosystems?

Building upon the field experience at Bhandup Pumping Station, Waatavaran Foundation conducted a Naturalist Training Programme for 78 students from VES College of Architecture.

Students explored urban ecology, biodiversity, native and exotic plants, bird behaviour, butterfly life cycles, pollinators, ecosystem services and ethical wildlife observation.

They also developed practical naturalist skillsโ€”including species identification, nature journaling, photography, ecological documentation and habitat assessment.

A major focus of the programme was understanding how biodiversity can become part of architecture and urban planning through native landscaping, green roofs, rain gardens, water-sensitive design and small ecological habitats.

Because nature-positive cities will not emerge through landscaping alone. They will be shaped by professionals who understand how living systems function.

From architecture students to urban naturalistsโ€”the learning had begun.

What changes when architecture students begin reading landscapes before drawing them?

As part of the Nature Connect initiative under Mumbai Ekatra, 45 students from VES College of Architecture participated in a guided nature trail at Bhandup Pumping Station - one of Mumbaiโ€™s significant wetland and mangrove ecosystems.

Students observed birds, butterflies, mangroves and native vegetation while learning nature journaling, bird counting and ecological documentation techniques.

From Painted Storks and White-throated Kingfishers to Green Bee-eaters and Plain Tiger butterflies, every observation revealed how much life exists within Mumbaiโ€™s urban landscape.

The experience encouraged students to see the city not merely as buildings and infrastructure, but as a living ecosystem where people, plants, wildlife and natural habitats are deeply interconnected.

This was the first step in the journey - from observing nature to designing with it.

_On Wednesday, follow the journey as these architecture students move from observation to naturalist training - and explore what it means to design with nature._

Nature conservation is about protecting forests, rivers, wildlife, or coastlines. At the same time it is also about protecting the relationship between people and the ecosystems they depend on.

Across Waatavaranโ€™s work with tribal families, women, farmers, youth, and forest-dwelling communities, we see conservation as dignity in action.

When a community secures forest rights, it can protect forests better.
When womenโ€™s groups build forest-based livelihoods, conservation becomes income security.
When traditional ecological knowledge is documented, biodiversity is preserved with memory and meaning.

This World Nature Conservation Day, we honour the communities who remind us that nature is not โ€œout thereโ€. It is home, food, culture, livelihood, and future.

Mangroves are often called coastal shields. But for the communities living near creeks, coasts, and forest edges, they are much more than that.

They protect homes from rising waters, support fish and biodiversity, store carbon, and hold together fragile coastal livelihoods.

At Waatavaran, our work reminds us every day that conservation cannot be separated from community rights, local knowledge, and climate resilience. Whether in Mumbaiโ€™s coastal ecosystems or in the forest landscapes of Raigad, nature is safest when the people closest to it are empowered to protect it.

This World Mangrove Day, letโ€™s recognise mangroves not just as ecosystems, but as lifelines.
