March 2026 was a landmark month for Waatavaran Foundation, defined by community-led resilience across Sudhagad–Pali and Roha. From securing Individual Forest Rights to a massive shramdaan effort in Asanewadi—where locals dug over 700 plantation pits—the power of collective action is transforming our landscapes.

Between resource mapping in villages like Patansai and building vital water recharge systems, we are ensuring both nature and livelihoods thrive. We are also proud to announce our GuideStar India Platinum Certification, marking a new milestone in our commitment to transparency.

Grassroots climate action is taking shape where it matters most!

In the villages of Sudhagad and Roha, a powerful step toward Locally-Led Climate Action has begun—bringing together communities, Gram Panchayats, and institutions to co-create solutions rooted in local realities.

With partners like Tata Institute of Social Sciences and Asar Social Impact Advisors, Waatavaran is leading this initiative focusing on climate resilience, gender inclusion, and sustainable rural development.

A comprehensive baseline survey covering over 500 families was successfully conducted across the villages of Aptavane and Sambhe. The effort was driven by strong community participation, with 30 local citizens being trained and actively involved in the data collection process. Additionally, 11 students contributed on-ground support, bringing in fresh perspectives and energy to the work. This collaborative approach ensured that the survey was not only extensive but also deeply rooted in local engagement and ownership.

Using tools like the KoBo app, communities are not just participating—they’re shaping their own future. The insights gathered will directly inform Gram Panchayat Development Plans aligned with key goals like water security, gender equality, climate action, and forest conservation.
This is what real change looks like: local voices, local action, lasting impact.

The trail at Bhandup Pumping Station was a powerful reminder that Mumbai’s future isn't just built with concrete, but with the roots of our mangroves. 🌿

Waatavaran, with the support of Mumbai Ekatra initiative, stepped into the wetlands along with students from VES College of Architecture to witness city's ecological heartbeat. Beyond spotting vibrant species like Painted Storks and Green Bee-eaters, these future architects learned to "read" the landscape—identifying bird trails, documenting biodiversity through journaling, and understanding the vital role these ecosystems play in our climate resilience.

We are proud to see the next generation of designers developing a deeper connection with the natural blueprints that protect our coastlines. Watch the highlights of our journey below! 🎥

Nature's intricate design

This detailed close-up shows a large, dry red clay soil ant nest captured by waatavaran team member in Raigad, Maharashtra.

Each small mound of soil, laboriously shaped and packed, is a testament to the collective strength of an ant colony.

They construct these nests with intricate chamber and tunnel systems, creating a stable environment for their young and food stores.

It's a wonderful example of natural ingenuity and communal effort in the wild.

Training the Guardians of our Forests 🌿

Strengthening the agency and management capabilities of forest-dwelling communities is at the heart of what we do. We recently hosted a successful CFRMC meeting and training session in Roha, bringing together 40 dedicated committee members and representatives from the administration of Roha Block, Raigad district.

Our discussions centered on the effective management of Community Forest Resources and the vital roles committees play in conservation.

Grateful for the collaborative support from the Integrated Tribal Development Department (Mr.Amol Warule), and officials from the Sub Divisional Office. Knowledge sharing is the first step toward true community-led conservation.

By clarifying roles, responsibilities, we are ensuring that local communities are equipped to lead the way in environmental stewardship!

We were glad to be a part of Mumbai Ektra showcase held at Ravindra Natya Mandir.

Around 30–40 participants engaged with the showcase, interacting with diverse projects and understanding the impact behind each initiative.

We presented our project “Nature Connect” — an initiative focused on reconnecting urban youth with biodiversity through immersive nature trails and experiential learning

It was inspiring to share space with projects like Songs from My Dabba, Waste to Value, Restore Aarey Forest, Smart Dustbin Project, and many more — each contributing to building a more sustainable Mumbai

This World Forestry Day, we’re not just saving forests — we’re creating one. 🌱

📍 Sudhagadh, Raigad — where change takes root.

5,000 trees. 5,000 tons of carbon.
One collective step towards a greener future.

A Blueprint for a Greener Future! 🌏

Mapping 215 hectares of forest is no small feat. But for the community at Patansai, it’s about securing their lifeline.

Through the Shivarferi initiative, experts and locals are coming together to map their resources—from the heights of Phatphaticha Maal to the slopes of Rithicha Bodan.

Supported by the Waatavaran Foundation, this CFR (Community Forest Resources) committee is proving that when local wisdom meets technical planning, the results are transformative.

They aren't just living in the forest; they are managing it.
