🌱 Planning with communities, for communities.

Under the University of Toronto India Foundation (UTIF) project, Waatavaran Foundation facilitated a participatory village development planning exercise at Aptavane Gram Panchayat, bringing together local representatives, women, VDC members, Anganwadi and ASHA workers, and community members.

The discussion focused on four key SDGs — Gender Equality, Clean Water & Sanitation, Climate Action, and Life on Land. Through a Transect Walk and GPDP Mapping, participants identified local realities around water, natural resources, livelihoods, agriculture, women’s participation, and community priorities.

The programme also encouraged women-led entrepreneurship, with the Shivshambhe Women’s Self-Help Group from Sambe showcasing their locally prepared Modaks. 🌿

🌱 Building Women’s Enterprises, Strengthening Local Economies

As part of our project with the University of Toronto India Foundation, Waatavaran Foundation, in collaboration with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), conducted a training workshop for women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs) across Aptavane and Sambe villages in and of .

With the participation of 67 women SHG members, the workshop focused on building practical knowledge around:
✨ Women’s entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship
💰 Financial inclusion and business planning
🌱 Sustainable development and community-led change
🛍️ Local market analysis and market linkages

The sessions, led by Dr. Samapti Guha, Professor, Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, TISS Mumbai, encouraged women to look at their SHGs not only as platforms for savings and credit, but also as potential community enterprises and pathways to sustainable livelihoods.

What made the conversations particularly meaningful was the openness with which women shared the challenges they face - from access to capital and marketing to family and social barriers.

One message came through clearly:building a successful enterprise requires more than skills and products, it requires access to a sustained market.

Creating stronger and more reliable market linkages can help women move from producing locally to building viable enterprises, strengthening household incomes and local economies in the process.

The workshop was a step towards creating that ecosystem - where women’s knowledge, entrepreneurship and collective strength can translate into sustainable economic opportunities.

🌿 From Forest to Plate: Celebrating Traditional Knowledge at Ranbhajya Mahotsav 2026

At the Ranbhajya Mahotsav 2026 in women from the Tribal community came together to celebrate the rich tradition of wild forest vegetables and the knowledge passed down through generations.

Around 18–20 varieties of wild vegetables, naturally sourced from the surrounding forests, were prepared into delicious traditional dishes by the participating women. 🌱

The event went beyond food and flavours. Participants and visitors were guided on the nutritional value, energy and calorie content of these forest foods, along with ways to preserve and store these seasonal vegetables for longer periods. The discussion also highlighted the importance of naturally grown, locally available foods and their role in supporting healthier and more sustainable food systems.

Our Block Coordinator, Shivaji, was invited as one of the judges to taste and rate the dishes. After tasting each one, his takeaway was simple and beautiful:

“Every single dish was prepared with love and came straight from nature to the plate. So, every participant is a winner.”❤️

And that truly captures the spirit of the Mahotsav.

This was not just a celebration of wild vegetables. It was a celebration of Adivasi women, traditional food systems, indigenous knowledge, biodiversity and our deep relationship with nature.

🌱 When food comes from the forest, it brings generations of knowledge to the plate.

This Raksha Bandhan too, the forest received a promise of protection.🌿

As they do every year, the tribal community of Thanale in celebrated Raksha Bandhan by tying rakhis to the Umbar and Moh native trees in their community recognised forest area.

A simple tradition carries a powerful message: the forest is not merely a resource, it is a shared home, a living heritage, and a responsibility passed from one generation to the next.

We are proud to witness and support that keep this relationship with nature alive and pass its wisdom on to future generations. 🌳

*Shaping a cleaner pathway for mobility in Mumbai and beyond* 🌱

Mr. Bhagwan Kesbhat was invited to the *“Pathway for Sustainable Energy Adoption in Mobility Sectors”* programme, organised by Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) a couple of weeks back, under the guidance of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB).

The discussion highlighted an important reality: _addressing air pollution and carbon emissions from the mobility sector requires a meaningful shift towards CNG, LNG and electric mobility, alongside a stronger focus on transforming our public transport systems._

For Mumbai and its surrounding regions, cleaner buses, autos and taxis can play a critical role in improving air quality while making sustainable mobility more accessible to citizens.

The transition to clean energy is not only an environmental imperative - it is increasingly a public health imperative.

Grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this important conversation alongside leaders and experts from the energy and mobility sectors.
