The 7th General Body Meeting (GBM) of the IIPS Alumni Association (IIPSAA) was successfully held on June 10, 2025, in a hybrid mode, with active participation both at the IIPS campus and online via Webex.

We were delighted to see the enthusiastic response from alumni across batches and locations. The meeting served as an important platform to review the association’s progress, discuss future initiatives, and strengthen our alumni network.

With profound sorrow, we mourn the passing of Prof. K. Anil Kumar, a distinguished alumnus of IIPS and a distinguished person in the field of demography and public health. His unwavering dedication to teaching and research, coupled with his gentle and humble spirit, touched the lives of countless colleagues, students, and the wider academic community. His legacy of knowledge and kindness will forever remain in our hearts.

To honour his life and invaluable contributions, IIPSAA warmly invites you to join us for an online condolence meeting, where we can come together in remembrance and gratitude.

Dr. Dhakad awarded Prestigious research grant by European Commission

Dr. Moradhvaj Dhakad has been awarded the prestigious ( ) Research Grant by the European Commission. The grant, valued at ₹2 crore Indian rupees, will fund his pioneering research on socio-economic heterogeneity in premature mortality across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Dr. Dhakad will conduct this research at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) in Germany.

Dr. Dhakad brings extensive expertise to this endeavor. Currently affiliated with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) Austria, his work focuses on socio-economic determinants of health, longevity, and global population projections. Previously, he served as a Research Scientist at the Vienna Institute of Demography (Austrian Academy of Sciences - Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften (ÖAW)), where he contributed to the Global Population Projections following the socio-economic pathways covering 200 countries. He has also held positions as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Vienna. He wrote a book on adults health in India with a co-author Professor Prof. Nandita Saikia. His research has been published in various demography and public health journals.

Dr. Dhakad earned his PhD and MPhil in Population Studies under -Nandita saikia from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, following a Master’s degree from the International International Institute for Population Sciences - IIPS , Mumbai.

“Receiving this grant is a tremendous honor and a responsibility. By uncovering how socio-economic inequalities shape survival, we can push for policies that close the gaps in healthcare access and create a fairer world where no one is left behind” said Dr.

Our esteemed alumna, Dr. K G Santhya has been honored with the 2025 IUSSP-Mattei Dogan Foundation Award for Comparative Research in Demography. 👏
Dr. Santhya completed her MPS and MPhil at International Institute for Population Sciences - IIPS, Mumbai (1992–93) and later dedicated 22 years to the Population Council, contributing significantly to demographic research and policy.
This prestigious award recognizes her outstanding contributions to the field. Congratulations, Dr. Santhya! 🎖️👏
